    Help.
Have just rebuilt an Acer Travelmate 2200,loaded XP Professional on it, but when I try to upgrade the memory from the standard chip it doesnt like it!!
If I add an extra 1Gb chip into the spare slot under fan casing it comes up on start up as file missing system32\drivers\ntfs.sys. If I remove the original chip and replace with one 1Gb card only it fires up ok, but again when you try to add the second 1Gb card the same error message, file missing system32\drivers\ntfs,sys comes up.I have looked at a PDF of the instruction manual and follwed to the letter as far as ram upgrade but at this juncture am now completely at a loss as to what to do next. The 2200 will support 2Gb ram so why cant I load it?
Is there any upgrade needed or anyway to get it to acknowledge the second ram chip?

    Ok,
Have done the BIOS upgrade and same thing happening, when I try to put the second 1Gb chip in I get " windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:system32\drivers\ntfs.sys"
Having looked at microsoft site they say do the following:
ntfs.sys missing or corrupt error message
To resolve this problem do the followings:-
1] Boot computer with the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
2] To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
3] At the command prompt, type the following commands:-

cd \windows\system32\drivers [Press the ENTER Key]

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old [Press the ENTER Key]

If the ntfs.sys file is there and corrupt it will rename it. If it is not there then it was missing.

4]At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    copy X:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers [Where X=CD-ROM Drive]

5]Remove the Windows XP CD from CD-ROM drive, type quit, and then
press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.

    6. Restart the system.

Have tried this but when I type the command to copy drivers it says"access denied" and now it wont fire up past a safe boot prompt which when I say "start normally" tells me "windows could not start etc etc"
Any ideas? Am fast running out of patience here!!!

Maybe you can get BartPE cd, boot from it and then copy ntfs.sys manually from your XP disk to your XP installation..

This is really weird. I`ve just done a complete reformat and reloaded XP from scratch, and when I put the extra 1Gb chip in the error comes up, but when I put the original 256meg chip in the spare slot it works giving me 1.19Gb ram.
Any ideas why that will work but two 1Gb won`t?

Are you sure your laptop actually support 2GB of RAM?

Did you try this 1GB+256MB configuration with both 1GB sticks? Maybe the stick you bought is faulty..

When I get home tonight I am going to try all the combinations possible so I will post the results later. And, Yes, it is possible to run 2Gb ram on this machine. Thats what makes it hard to understand why it wont, but I am beginning to think it may be a faulty ram chip...
Thanks for all the input and assistance so far, much appreciated.

    Ok,
Tried all combinations of the three ram chips last night and surprise, surprise, one of the 1Gb chips would appear to be DOA. have now contacted the supplier and awaiting their response.Other than that machine is now working fine with 1.19Gb of ram.
Again ,many thanks for the input to all. :) :)

Just as an aside, I had trouble with my dell inspiron 9200 and when I removed the Ram it was the same as fitted to the Acer.I fitted a 1Gb chip from the Dell into the Acer and hey presto I now have a 1.9Gb Acer. I have sent the faulty ram back for replacement so when it comes back everything should be back to normal on both Laptops...
Thanks again for all the help everyone :D :D :D
