It depends on how you get them configured, but in general Acer is a nice brand.

    512 MB RAM
    60 GB HDD

    12" screen

    Powerful enough?

That is most certainly a "powerful" computer--although it depends on the applications being run on the laptop. For instance, if you will be playing 3d games, the mobile GPU (graphics processing unit) is very important. . .so this machine may or may not be suitable for that purpose as you didn't mention the graphics unit. Speed of the memory and hard drive are also equally important factors as the processor.

It is powerful enough for most tasks including internet based activities such as browsing, email etc.; word processing; watching dvd movies; burning cds; basic photo editing.

So in summation: it depends on *your* particular needs. If you can tell us that, we will be able to assist in a much more helpful manor.

    My Requirements:

    - My work nowadays required me to travel alot. Thus, my old Fujitsu S 4546 is becoming a little "heavier" than before. Thus, I required a much lighter notebook (ultraportable or medium ultrportable)

    - I preferred Centrino vs the traditional PCMCIA WiFi card bcoz of the built-in functionality. No need to insert in everytime to get access to Wifi. Sometimes becoming an inconvenience when I reboot my computer and to find out that I forgot to insert the WiFi Card. Thus, the need for me to re-boot. Hmmm..wasting my precious time again...

    - I did a lot of paperwork and presentations. Also the need to surf the need for my research purposes. However, I rarely use my Notebook to watch VCD or DVDs. The only multimedia I really need is for the presentation purposes.

    - I need a computer that can boot up fast. I cannot waste time booting or re-booting my computer in front of my potential clients.

    - I need > 1 GHz CPU bcoz I don't want to be obsoleted fast when a new CPU emerge.
Need 512 MB so that I will not be out of memory when Microsoft introduce new OS in future..haha..
40 GB HDD is quite sufficient..

    - Even tho' the extra USB ports helps, but its not that critical bcoz I have already purchase a 4-port USB hub. However, a 2-USB built-in ports really helps.

    - Although I can burn my pocket further but I don't think it will help me much coz the price of notebook also depreciate fast.

Hope the requirements above can be met by that specs..

For your needs, the Acer you specced works well. You might also consider the Fujitsu S6000 series.

Update: After installing several applications, the notebook fully boot-up about 1 minute and less. Is this usual?

I had a good idea after reading the posts . However, I wonder whether Acer 370 is able to manage digital video editing? I am currently a student and am deciding to on either the acer 2000 or acer 370. It seems that the only difference(besides the weight) is the processor, one is 1.6 the other 1.4
Is there a marked difference in performance? I intend to use the notebook for graphic designs , web creation, adobe........... Cld anyone kindly advise which is a better choice? Thanks.

wow. [ :D] i got my acer travelmate 371tci just today and... wow. it was all that i expected in a perfect laptop-- wireless networking, fast processor, ultraportable! all that one can ask for, in a very neat package! the screen is bright enough, no problems with the keyboard, i love all the added features such as IR port, external combodrive, memory card readers... wow. i didn't expect all of this in such a light laptop! i'd rate this 10 out of 10. you can never go wrong buying this thing.

i was thinking of buying an ASUS S5N. it's a tad more expensive. but thinking... i think i more of my mone's worth buying acer over Asus. it's all good.

    vita perros est!

I am thinking of buying a 371TCi and have two questions:

    1. How good is the screen?
    2. How long does the batteries last in practise?

Can anyone answer any of the above questions?
