Sky Anytime requires me to carry out a security upgrade to my WMP11 DRM.
I have spent the last couple of days trying to do this without any succes.

My computer is a new Acer Travelmate 5720G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT running Vista Home Premium with WMP11.

As some people have suggested, I have tried 2 DRM Reset utilities:-
    http://www.netflix.com/pages/previews/resetdrm.exe
    and
    http://www.spyonguys.tv/drm_reset_tool.zip

I have also tried removing both the ATI Catalyst Control Centre (CCC) and the ATI mobility driver that came with the sytem.

I have also tried restoring the system to Factory Default

The result is always the same, when I try to upgrade my security component from http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite/en/indivit.asp, IE7 freezes near the end of the upgrade download.

The only message I get is "security component could not be upgraded"

Do anyone have any ideas and is this a general problem with Acer laptops or just my machine? Has anyone with a Travelmate 5720G managed to resolve this ?

I have an Acer Aspire 5310 notebook. Likewise I cant get Sky Anytime to work on my laptop. It says I need the drm upgrade, but the upgrade wont update wmp11, and then ie7 locks out.

Have reformatted the P.C. twice and wasted a lot of time.

Have more or less accepted that the fault lies with the machine.

I previously suspected that the problem was with the ATI Radeon 2400 XT on my machine. But I believe your machine uses an Intel GPU, so the problem maybe elsewhere.

When I spoke to Acer, they told me that any problems relating to Microsoft (or other) upgrades need to be addressed to Microsoft. When I called Microsoft, they told me that because Vista was preinstalled on my machine (and therefore an OEM version) that they do not provide support and that I need to contact Acer.

My only hope is that someone on this site may be able to work it out.

I have contacted Acer computers today, (Monday 25/02/08), and gave them the link to this page. Nic their technician said they were unaware of the problem, and said he would refer the problem to his team leader and hopefully get back to me tomorrow.

Explained I had rolled back the system to its factory setting, and immediatly tried the microsoft update from

    http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp

and as usual the update cannot be completed and ie7 and wmp11 lock out. !!!

I spoke to sky and they advise they tried the update on one of their Vista machines, and the update applied successfully.

So why wont this work on Deltasails Acer Vista machine or mine - both new machines which have been rollbacked to factory state. ???

Thinking of buying an Acer PC keep your eyes peeled to this thread To see how those good people at Acer help or not -

Failing that answers on a postcard.!!!

I've also spoken to people that have successfully carried out the DRM upgrade to their Vista & WMP11 machines.

Perhaps just certain Acer models are not able to complete this upgrade.

It would be usefull to hear from other Acer owners (running Vista with WMP11) whether they were able to complete this upgrade:-

Hey, I may have solved this problem in a very roundabout way. There is a program called Overdrive media player that is used to play overdrive media files (surprisingly). This has a built in algorithm that checks for updated security components; if you aren't updated, it connects and does it for you. After many frustrating attempts through conventional means, I got this to work for me. So, steps are:

    1) Go to http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/download.asp

    2) Follow instructions there

    3) When you run the program it should automatically ask you to update your security components, if not, follow the 'any time' directions on the above mentioned webpage.

    4) Cross fingers

    5) Uninstall Overdrive media player if you don't want it.

Pressurelock, you are a STAR !

Your method worked first time. I hope it works for you as well Blackpatch. I guess the problem was with the microsoft installation routine.

This could help quite a few people out.

    Thanks

    Brill - Brill - Brill

    What a breakthru.

Worked 1st time. Had given up hope of ever getting this to work. Acer were useless and in fact discourteous - quoting their pcs are supplied "as it" with no guarantte that they can work with any purchased or upraded software or hardware.

    Over the moon.

    Thanks Pressurelock and deltasail.
