    Hi,

I have an Acer Travelmate 5720 where the power jack has broken loose from its mounting in the plastic shell. The only way I can plug it in currently is to remove the middle cover from the laptop and use a screwdriver to hold the jack in place from the rear.

Is it a difficult part to repair? Which part of the case do I need to remove to get to the mounting point? I found a copy of the service manual.

    James.

You can buy a replacement jack on eBay and with a service manual you should know how to get to it. You are going to need a soldiering iron and some basic soldiering skills if you want to replace it yourself. You can also take it to a local repair center (not necessarily Acer's since the warranty is expired at this point) and let them do it - it's not a hard job for a professional so it shouldn't be an expensive one either.

The jack is not soldered to the motherboard it is a self-contained unit connected via wires to a socket on the motherboard. I don't think the jack is broken I think the plastic tabs on the case that hold it in place have snapped off.

Just glue the power socket on the one side of its mounting position. And don`t attached power connector with excess effort in the future. Usual problem with notebooks using such power socket holders.

If you are sure that it's that you can simply glue it in place. We are talking about this right?

I would advise you to dismantle the notebook and check carefully what is the problem (I don't know if you can see the connector clearly or not). If you don't feel like dismantling the notebook twice, you might want to order the replacement beforehand. If it turns out it's not needed, so be it - it's not expensive.

EDIT: propolkin beat me to it.
