    Acer Travelmate 5720g - UPGRADING to 8400M GS

    I bought the "VGA Board MXM.8MGSHmm 256Mb" for my 5720g.

    There:

    The user TehSuigi says it's a GeForce 8400M GS 256MB MXM-I.

    But the card doesn't work, my notebook just "beep" and the display remains black.

    I'm wondering because the card is in the list for my notebook, but it is an MXM1 and my notebook has an MXM2.

    Has anyone an idea to get it work? Maybe with anoder BIOS?

    what was your previous card?

    The MOBILITY RADEON X2500 performs better if that's what you had.

    Unfortunately, I don't know any thing about the BIOS.

    My old card was an Mobility HD2600.

    I bought the 8400M, so it's a change to Nvidia.

    I have just bought the Nvidia, so i try to get it work with your help=)

    The 2600 also performs better than the 8400M GS, unless your previous card died..

    No, the Ati 2600 doesn't work again:-/

    Now i search help for the Nvidia 8400M gs. (I have already bought it!)

    Any solution for my problem?

    You just bought yourself a faulty card. Cheer.
    My friend's laptop used this card and got fried-up.
    Nvidia 8400 - 8600 is always not too recommended by a lot of people due to the overheat/burning problem.
    I hope the cards you bought have fix the problem.
    Get 9-series Nvidia cards, they are more stable and do not burn easily.

    Yes, it is possible you have bought a defective card. Many are. But you already bought it... :eek:

    You are taking a chance if you put it in, but it could be "fixed" version. But thats not why its not working right now.

    Anyway, if your BIOS doesnt support the card... Then, theres nothing you can do about it, unless there is a BIOS update available...

    Do you think the card was defective BEFORE i bought it?
    Or when I put the card in my notebook?

    Your card might be or might not be defective before you buy.
    Your card might be or might not be defective after you use it or using it now.
    It is based on your LUCK now.
    If you're lucky, then you would get a nice 8400M GS without the defective issue(before buy and after use or using it). If you're unlucky, you know what would happen.

    -Personal Advices-
    Do some research before buying something.

    I felt regret of buying my laptop darn it. I should not buy this "semi-defective" laptop. I saw this laptop newly release and bought it without thinking. The defectiveness was caused by ACER(a lot of research and confirmed, a lot of fixes and topic on it). Almost every same model of my laptop experienced the same problem. ACER really pissed me off now(got no choice my region is dominated by Acer, have to buy it). =.=

    Another question:
    Nvidia 8400M GS is MXM1
    My notebook is MXM2

    Can this be the problem?

    I know MXM2 notebooks support MXM1, but should I flash the Bios of video card or motherboard?

    MXM-II notebooks can support MXM-I cards, and should do so without a problem.
    The motherboard's BIOS might need an update - check the Acer Downloads page to see if there's any updates.

    Even if it is defective though, thats not why its not working now.

    The problem is usually after A year or so of use, itll fail. Not off the bat. :p

    Ok, i send the 8400M GS back and try it with a new 8400M (i think in 2-4 weeks the new card is here).

    So we will see if it's only a defect of the card or no.

    The 8400M GS is in the list (55.TPE01.001) for TM 5720g:

    Or you could slap an HD 3650 for a real upgrade in there. (M86) with 256mb GDDR3 (Better than 512mb ddr2).

    I got a new 8400M.
    The card doesn't work, how the old one. So we now that my notebook is the problem, not the card.

    For information: Actually I use the Ati 2600, MXM2.
    I want to use the Nvidia 8400M, MXM1.

    Acer say, that the card is supported by my notebook.

    It's a change to MXM1, maybe this is the problem? I have a new Bios.

    Any solutions?
