    Hiya!

Does anyone know what resolution the screen will have on the Acer Ultra M5 15" laptop? I really hope it that it is not 1366 x 768! It is enough that already the M3 has that. 1600 x 900 would be perfect, however 1080 would be acceptable as well, but not the 1366 x 768 resolution.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers :)

My bet would be the 1366 x 768 display. Acer is truly behind the curve.

That is what I'm afraid of. It looks like it could be a hit, with being really thin and yet powerful, but with a low screen resolution it is kinda like fitting budget road tyres on to a F1 car. Wasting the potential.

If the resolution is correct then the only difference from an M3 would be the illuminated keyboard...

I was sort of hoping it would be an "ultrabook" which you can play decent games on.

I'm still hoping until we get confirmation on the specs.

    Cheers

the M5's GT640m will use 2GB DDR5 ram instead of the M3'S 1GB DDR3. and an IvyBridge cpu as well...

Hmm, ok. So there is a bit more to it. That's good. I just hope the screen will be an upgrade as well. The other choice is going for a Samsung Chronos 7 with Ivy Bridge, but those are a bit thicker and have not arrived to the UK yet. I like thin and powerful ;)

Yes, I've been keeping an eye on it as well, however, for many manufacturers, it seems that their own websites are the last ones to be updated with new products/specs etc. I don't know how good Acer are in that respect.

Thanks for the link. It appears to be a genuinely good laptop- two serious drawbacks, based on the review in question, are lack of an integrated 3G modem and a glossy LCD.
Both very serious ones when we're talking about an ultrabook which is meant to be used outside.

It will use DDR3 vram, not GDDR5.

That's true- it's a lower clocked version of 640M (500MHz core instead of 625MHz) so it stands to reason that wouldn't use faster memory than 640Ms used in Acers.

Besides we all know Acer won't start using GDDR5 until the rest of the world is on GDDR9 ;)

Add a third drawback ... the craptastic low resolution HD display. An HD+ display on a 14" notebook is a must have these days. Even Dell's new XPS 14 will have one. Get with it Acer.

When the hell is this being released, man? They debuted it with a press release in May, with no release date. Mid-June is the only release date i've seen mentioned and Engadget is the only source of that date. It's also stupidly vague.

This god damn thing doesn't even exist. The European model that is listed on each individual European Acer website with specs, is not available for purchase anywhere! The UK website lists the M5 as the newest in their Ultrabook range, yet no models are even listed for this one.

I don't want to buy the M3 only for the M5 to release two weeks later. Can anybody shed some light on a UK release date? I'm a desperate man. :/

Pay attention to cooling/overharting problems when looking through reviews.
The rest is known- quality is OK, screen is mediocre, performance is good, battery times are good too.
Still if it's overheating and has throttling issues- it's a no-go.

this site might interest those who are keeping track on the M5 just like me.
    15 吋 Ultrabook 一樣輕身 Acer Timeline U M5 - NB新聞 - ACER 討論區 - ePrice.HK

now this is a question of curiosity, how come the M5 581TG 15.6" ...
    Intel® Core™ i5-3317UM, 20GB SSD + 500GB HDD = 1.8kg
    Intel® Core™ i5-3317UM, 128GB SSD = 2.0kg
    Intel® Core™ i7-3517UM, 256GB SSD = 1.8kg

see the weight differentiation? SSD is heavier than HDD? and i7 lighter than i5? and why the hell 14" weight is the same with 15".

I'm guessing it's a mistake- both SSD-equipped weigh 1.8kg and the one with SSD+HDD is a bit heavier at 2.0kg.

The M5-581TG (15") has just literally, this day, become available for distribution in the UK. Shops should start receiving stock from next week onwards.

The model numbers and specs are as follows:

    NX.M2GEK.001 - Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-581TG-53316G52Mass (15.6 inch) Ultrabook Core i5 (3317U) 1.7GHz 6GB 500GB+20GB SSD DVD-SM DL WLAN BT Webcam Windows 7 HP 64-bit (GeForce GT 640M 1GB)

    NX.M2GEK.002 - Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-581TG-53316G12Mass (15.6 inch) Ultrabook Core i5 (3317U) 1.7GHz 6GB 128GB SSD DVD-SM DL WLAN BT Webcam Windows 7 HP 64-bit (GeForce GT 640M 1GB)

    NX.M2GEK.003 - Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-581TG-73516G12Mass (15.6 inch) Ultrabook Core i7 (3517U) 1.9GHz 6GB 128GB SSD DVD-SM DL WLAN BT Webcam Windows 7 HP 64-bit (GeForce GT 640M 1GB)

Apparently Ivy Bridge cores don't dissipate heat as efficiently as Sandy Bridge, so if there truly were overheating issues with the M3, expect them to remain (even more so) in the M5.

A strange thing that I found out is that there are also updated M3 models expected later this year. I'm not sure if this will hold true as the specs are essentially the same as the M5; I can only deduce that some countries will have the M3 and others the M5, but who knows?

I suppose the M3 could be i3 specific (as i3 Ivy isn't available yet) once the M5 is released, that would allow it to be much cheaper than the M5.

Also, it looks as if, in terms of raw power and bang for your buck, the M5 will be cheaper than the M3. According to notebookcheck, the i5-3317U (Ivy in M5) is just as powerful but more efficient than last year's i7-2637 (Sandy in M3). Makes me wonder how powerful the i7 will be, no benchmarks yet.

Otherwise, apart from the processor (Ivy Bridge - Intel Graphics HD 4000 in the M5, Sandy Bridge - Intel Graphics HD 3000 in the M3), the differences between the M3 and the M5 are the chassis, headphone slot (back of the M3, right side of the M5), power button (front-centre of the M3, front-right of the M5), keyboard (backlit in M5).

    Edit: Here's a comparison of the M3's i5 and i7 vs the M5's i5 and i7: http://ark.intel.com/compare/56858,54618,65714,65707

There were overheating issues with the M3? That is a surprise, considering the low power 17W CPU and Kepler GPU. There should be no problem dealing with that heat.

The more ultabook-like computers become, the more overheating issues we'll see- let's be honest about it.
If you compare the radiator on an ultrabook with a radiator on a classic notebook it's easily going to be half the size of the latter.
And in the end you end up with a radiator that's half the thermal capacity you had on a normal notebook and half the TDP on the CPU but still the same TDP of the GPU. Trouble guaranteed.

Granted it's oversimplified but you guys know what I mean.

The g at the end of the name with integrated graphics is silly.
