well, this is the one I'm waiting for, and it won't be released until mid-august in Europe : Acer Aspire 1551-K62B4G32n (LX.SBB02.006) | Skinflint Price Comparison EU
It's the one with the Turion II Neo X2 K625 and the 5800mAh battery...
So until then, I'll be looking forward to reading reviews and tips from other lucky owners. Thanks for starting this thread! -
Ok i sent acer an email twice and all i could get out of them was this.
Thank you for contacting Acer America. I'll be happy to assist you with this
issue.
From your mail, I understand that you would like to get information regarding
BIOS update..
Flashing the wrong BIOS can cause harm to the system. Acer recommends that you
should only upgrade your firmware/drivers if you have been instructed to do so
by an Acer Customer Care representative.
Ok they wouldnt even tell me what the bios update fixed.
Anybody have any steps to take to update? Thanks -
Ok i have noticed that the lcd screen isnt as good as my other laptop with the same resolution. Also the hinges do seem to be a little weak.I wished it had the hing all the way across like my hp.I cant wait for my ssd to get here.Just need to read up on the ssd install.Would really like to have some steps to take for install......

In the U.S. I believe that model is the 1551-5448. I got mine on Amazon a month ago. They still have them.
It's a terrific machine except for the battery life. I can barely squeeze 4 hours out of it, probably because I use all the bells and whistles all the time. -

I saw a 5200mh battery for sale on Ebay but I doubt it was an authentic acer part. Still 5200mh and 4800mh isn't that much improvement to shell out 68$ for
.

Yea thats the other thing about this laptop.Battery life.Would really like to see a 9 cell setup. That would be worth getting..
-
ok now i installed the 1810 tray and it told me on battery that it was only running 793 clock speed out of 1300.To fix this i went under power plan and went too ATI graphics power settings and on battery i put it on maximize performance now it locked in on 1300

Anyone nowhere i can get the k625 models. the suspense is too long. im willing to wait up till end of this month or might go for k325. need good price and shipping to uk.

I think I found position of PLL, I mark it on minhuci's picture. Unfortunately, I cant find out, what characters written on this chip. It will be nice to see this fragment of picture enlarged, or detailed instruction how to disassemble this notebook.

PLL Acer 1551 : ICS 9LPRS480BKL. - I don't know it personally.
I have acer 1551 with 1 gig ddr3 1066mhz. Can i put 2x2gb ddr3 1333mhz or only 1066mhz? -
The upgrade resulted into a much better WEI rating
-
yea id recommend the upgrade. my wei score is 4.2 on this rig

Im trying to convince my brother to get this instead of the 1215N! Any performance of game thread anywere for this netbook/notebook?
Also is the graphic card shared or dedicated? It seems to be different on sites. -
Logicbuy has a deal on these for $295.99.

I know this is going to sound heart breaking, but my Aspire One 1551 has been dropped and the LCD is cracked. Everything on the laptop is functional except the screen. I want to replace it but because it's so new, I haven't found the model listed on Ebay.
Does anyone know which Aspire One LCD is compatible with it? I've seen Ebay listings for the 751H and 1410 and so on and they have the same specs for the LCD but the model isn't listed. Just want to know before I blow the bank $70. Thanks! -
Essenar, you need LCD, made by AU Optronics (AUO205C).

Now, I know for a fact that the Neo K625 supports DDR3 with a maximum frequency of 533 MHz (DDR3-1066). However, the AS1551 BIOS was programmed to not allow frequencies above 400 MHz (DDR3-800), most likely in order to prolong the battery life a bit.
The reason Acer ships DDR3-1333 sticks in some machines (like in mine) is not that the K625 processor can support that speed, but rather that nowadays DDR3-1333 costs the same or might even be cheaper than DDR3-1066 or DDR3-800 (the latter of which is not even manufactured anymore). Since all DDR3 RAM normally can operate at all standard speeds below its top rated speed, the effect is the same as if they had shipped sticks with lower top speeds.
So, if anybody is thinking of changing their DDR3-1066 sticks for DDR3-1333 ones, do not waste your time nor your money, because the K625 processor woud never use any RAM operating above 533 MHz (DDR3-1066) and the BIOS will downclock everything to 400 MHz.
The question now is where we can find a BIOS version that will allow the RAM to operate at 533 MHz instead of those measly 400 MHz.
May I ask what BIOS version any or all of your AS1551s are sporting at the moment and if my theory that all of them (not only my machine and ccl2003's) are running their RAM at 400 MHz is true? Either CPU-z or my favorite HWiNFO32 ( HWiNFO & HWiNFO32 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools) will tell you the facts.
EDIT: I forgot to say the the reason that ccl2003's machine is now running faster is not that he is using DDR3-1333, but rather that two identical sticks will let the processor operate the memory in dual-channel mode and thus a bit faster than in single channel (single stick) mode. But the memory is nevertheless behaving exactly like DDR3-800 (and running at a nominal 400 MHz). -
sold my 1410-2285 a couple weeks back and got myself the 1551-5448 off ebay today, along with a bt module... should get here in a few days...
i had a question about enabling bt, because on my old 1410 there use to be hardware toggles on the bottom left of the laptop, but the 1551 does not have them and as far as i saw, there are no function shortcuts on the keyboard neither... so do you have to manage those antennas manually? -
-
taking it apart now to install the bt module and wrap the top cover in white[?] 3m cf vinyl... vertex2 will get here in a couple more days :] -
@All 1551 owners
Anyone who has tried 2 x 4gb RAM on the 1551? Thanks. -
Works fine with 2x4gb ddr3 (need 64 bit OS obviously). -
Would you be kind enough to post a CPU-Z screenshot of the RAMs here?
Tia -
Sounds cool. My 1551-5448 came with 4GB standard.
Can you send a screen shot showing the 8GB total RAM? Also, what is your WEI (Windows Experience Index) rating on memory? -
Hi,
Anyone successful with finding out if the Aspire 1551 can be upgraded to 8gb ram?
Thanks! -
Success!
I was reading through this thread yesterday looking for the very same answer... Never been much for posting to forums... But... I am lucky enough to work in a PC Lab where I have access to various hardware... So I thought I would share the wealth... And...
8GB in the Aspire 1551 works like a charm!

It's been quite a while since anyone posted in here, but I want to toss in my thoughts on the 1551. I have the 5448 model with K625.
I got this gem in mid 2010, and I still love it today! IMO it is the best combination of size, performance, battery life, and price. Even today, one cannot find a better mix of the four. It's a shame it was discontinued after such a short time. I think it was only on the market about six months. I guess people prefer either a netbook or a "proper" laptop, not the beautiful combination of the two that is the 1551.
The factory hard drive failed hard within the first year. I replaced it with a 160GB Scorpio Black which served me well for about a year and half. It starting failing last week, so I've replaced it with a 120GB Mushkin Chronos SSD. Much to my surprise, the 1551's SATA port is actually SATA-III (6.0 Gbps). My WEI score for disk is now 7.9. This thing screams now: from bootloader to welcome screen in under 15 seconds, resume from hibernate (not sleep) in under 5 seconds.
I have had some problems lately (last 6 months or so) with it shutting itself off. I think it's heat-related. Hopefully my recent BIOS update to 1.18 (from 1.07) and the SSD will alleviate some of the heat issues. I'm planning to blow some compressed air through the vents as well to get out any dirt and dust. I've been using it on a cooling pad but hopefully I can reach a point where it's not needed anymore.
On the RAM speed issue, I doubt we'll ever get it above 400MHz. Although the K625 does have an IMC which supports higher speeds, the chances of anyone successfully unlocking the memory divider are nearly nil.
I'm glad to see this thing supports 8GB of RAM. It's unlikely to be a worthy upgrade for the vast majority of users, but it's still nice to have the option. Due to the above-mentioned divider lock, 2x4GB would only increase memory performance over 2x2GB if the new memory had better timing. You'd be likely to see an improved WEI score though, as Windows 7 limits it to 5.9 if available memory is less than 4032MB (4GB minus 64MB).Attached Files:
