REFERENCE IS AT END OF STATEMENT
In late May 2007, my husband and I both purchased Acer Aspire 5610z (i.e. 2separate laptops) as replacements for our 'elderly' Dell desktop which finally died after 10+ years.
Both of us use ours daily. Mine is prmarily for business use. At the time of purchase, it appeared to be the "best available for the $$". I had refused to purchase one previously as Acer was a new name to me and my concern was how quickly it could be repaired and if a facility was available locally. I finally gave in this past May as my husband has had frequent contact with Acer in Asia and had never heard of any difficulties.
On the surface, the gigs, RAM etc look fantastic.
However, since 3 days before Memorial day, I have had to have my personal laptop serviced once for a software problem (glitch involved Vista and a Yahoo toolbar... don't combine the 2 unless situation has been remedied). Ironically this happened 24 hours after the "warranty" expired!
Now, this morning roughly 2am central time (I run a business that deals primarliy with Asia - night here = day there) my video card finally gave up the ghost and cost me over a half a million US dollar commission!!!
Why did I wait? Two reasons, firstly, I deal with the Oil Industry and the service time from acer is EXCESSIVE!!! Secondly, there was NO consistency to the problem. Today problem might be horrid, but let it rest until cold and for the next week or so not a problem.
I spent time contacting Acer this morning (twice) and was told during the 1st call to send it in -at my cost- and it would be a minimum of 7-10 business days. The 2nd call, I got a very nice man who 'talked turkey' the 7-10 business days reality-wise means if I get it back in 3 weeks, I'm super lucky. In other words, how can I run my business w/o a computer (I won't go into the next 3 weeks of lost commissions simply because I can't deal with them via e-mail)?
My husband leaves for Asia in the morning and the ONLY way we are able to communicate is via computer. I freely admit we are a family of 5 laptops 3 of which belong to university students in the midst of finals, terms papers etc. which kid do I make give up the only way they have to do their work? complete term papers. You get the idea.
After getting nowhereduring call #1 to Acer, I even asked for a loaner, heck what did I have to lose? Then the guy who answered the phone tells me it's not his problem. At that point, I requested a supervisor FOUR TIMES!!!!!!!!! no not an exaggeration. I have learned that while every company has protocol the 'boss' has much more leeway than the person answering the phone. Never got past the guy who said hello.
REFERENCE: Might look like a 'great buy' but I will NEVER touch another one. In fact, the only cost I am willing to bear is the cost to send it back in pieces. Bottom line: SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GET A REAL COMPUTER! NOT A PIECE OF .... like acer.
If I had it to do again, Dell would be my number 1 choice. Three years ago, we purchased one for a child heading to college. This past summer when he was home for 36 hours, he made 1 phone call and in under 24 hours I had a service rep repairing the hardware problem in MY LIVING ROOM!! Now, that
is service. Acer can definitely learn. Sorry for how long this ended up being. -
I'm sure I will get nay-sayed and flamed mercilessly for this, but I've got to reply here. I've been in the tech industry for almost two decades now; done Microsoft support, ran an IT department, and still refurbish laptops on the side. And I say you're full of it and a troll, anakanak3, or at least supremely ignorant. Here's why.
First off, if I hear one more time about how someone earning a "half a million dollar commission" in one day mysteriously buys a budget $600 laptop, then supposedly looses more than most of us make per year because they had issues with it...give me a break. Your claims are baseless. You admit to having five laptops in the house, but couldn't use another one or borrow a friend's PC for a few hours, even with $500,000 on the line? You don't know how many times I've heard this in my days of doing tech support- people trying to make their issues sound life or death. If it were that important, and you were that rich, you wouldn't have a ten year old Dell. You'd own a $2k+ laptop with a two year warranty, with a backup standing by just in case.
Secondly, Vista is new and notoriously buggy. You had what, Windows 98 on your old desktop? Probably XP if you kept it upgraded. Both fairly quick, matured, and with decent compatibility. You had a Microsoft (Vista) and Yahoo (Toolbar) issue, which to sane people do not equal Acer being bad. Yet you thought they should fix it, and clearly got angry when it was completely out of their control. Perhaps I should complain to GM that my car charger and cellphone aren't compatible... I mean, it's in their car, right?
Thirdly, a loaner? What is this, a 1984 car garage? Does Acer have a local shop down the street from you, or do you think the electronics store should just let you 'borrow' their display model? Do you honestly think they should overnight drop-ship a replacement to you at their expense, because even though you're out of warranty you're solidly convinced everything is their fault?
Acer has some of the best notebooks around for the price. The specs are great, and overall they are good machines. They ARE a smaller company with limited support- which is why you can buy one on sale for $399 at your local Best Buy. But I argue that in this circumstance, it could have been any laptop brand and you'd still be angry. You're out of warranty, chose not to get the extended plan when you bought it, then ranted here when the world didn't bend over backward to make you happy.
I find you amusing, but your type of attitude is one of the biggest problems with consumerism today. I hope eventually everything works out for you, but thanks for staying away from Acer. Most of us here enjoy their products, and we don't need your self-important thread-jacking. Merry Christmas! -
I don't know CharredPC, do you think maybe deleting Yahoo Toolbar may have been a better solution than having the laptop serviced?
Ok, enough about flaming people that are replying to posts, telling everyone about there horrible experiences instead of helping the original post. Lets see what we can do to help shankari.
Here are the drivers for your lappy.
It looks like you have a choice with your lan and wireless, atheros or broadcom. You may want to try both to see which one you need. Also try try the bison drivers for you orbicam. See if you can manually update these drivers.
You may have to reformat and start over, if so try this order for installing drivers:
chipset
video
audio
lan
wireless
bluetooth
video camera
any card reader
cir infrared
any other drivers
Windows Updates (snag .net 1.1 and 2.0)
Acer EPower management
Hope this helps. -

You can find AnakAnak3's (or Alta's, as her name really is) nonsense all over the Web. Check it out. The nick is searchable. Seriously funny stuff.

Glad someone responded to this idiot. "Never heard of Acer.." Huh? Has this troll been under a rock for the last 15 years?
Sitting here on my XP'd (Vista was just awful) 5610Z (got it at Best Buy for less than $200) and have had absolutely zero trouble with it. Well, except for that nasty audio glitch that others reported and is fixed with a BIOS update.
As far as a charger goes, it's a very generic Lite-On brick that delivers 19 volts at 3.42 amps. Model number is PA-1650-02. Anything you can find with a plug that fits (tip POSITIVE) that can deliver 19 volts (no higher, no lower) at that amperage (higher amperage is OK) will work fine.

Can somebody link to the newest BIOS update to this model, that works - I can´t access most of Acers homepages, so I am having serious problems finding a update that I can download.

This is what I used on mine:

Hey, I have an Acer with the Model No. BL50. For some reason, I don't know why, but the other night it just froze on me, wouldn't process commands, and so I shut it off. When I went to turn it back on, it would only show the first screen, what with the Acer logo and the little blue bar on the bottom. That bar will only get to about 60% every time, and will not continue no matter how long you wait. Of course it shows the option for Press F2 for setup. When I go to do that, the option is replaced with "Please Wait..." and will do nothing further, no matter how long you wait. I cannot enter the bios at all to fix anything.
I called a friend of mine who owns a computer company, and he said that what I should do is remove the CMOS battery and then put it back in, as it might have gotten knocked.
The problem is though that I don't have the schematics for the laptop so I can find the CMOS battery. Perhaps someone could help with this? Even a guide as to how to properly disassemble the laptop would be helpful so I could find it myself. -
removing the CMOS battery is probably not gonna fix your issue... it sounds to me like your hard drive may have bitten the dust.
remove the MAIN battery, unplug the AC cord, then...
press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.....
then replace the battery and power plug... and reboot
(that will do the same thing as removing the CMOS BATTERY) it resets the BIOS to factory default settings and should force the laptop to auto detect the hard drive.
try that and report back -
Hi
New to the forum.
Just got back from a business trip, let my power supply for my Dell in the hotel (dumb move), grabbed my spare Acer 5610z, I get the power light the fan spools up, but I don't get any disk activity or splash screen. I get the same issue running from battery and power pack. It was running fine a week ago.
Anyone got any ideas?
Regards,
Jeff
