Up to date means Intel up to date or Acer up to date?
Because Acer isn't very up to date.
Also try without encryption etc. -
the drivers are up to date.....

Guys the solution to this problem is to open up the back of the laptop and swap the wireless conductors between them.
-
Try installing Windows 7 O.S with its own drivers.
-
Sorry Mrso but that's not the solution. It's not a software issue, it's a hardware one. I had exactly the same problem and tried EVERYTHING from a software perspective. The only solution is to open up the laptop and swap the wires...
-
You mean during assembly they messed up the sequence?
-
I don't know what happened I only know that many people had exactly the same problem (as you can see from the link) and they solved it by swapping the wires. I did too.

I can verify swapping the black and white wires attached to the wireless card fixes the connection problem.
Summary: On my Acer Aspire 5739g I had no WiFi connection even though my router signal was full. I could only connect from about 1 meter away. Swapping the antenna wires connected to my Intel WiFi Link 5100 so that the black antenna wire is connected to the connection marked "Main" and the white wire is connected to "Aux" fixed my problem.
My Story: I bought my 5739g before Christmas. I noticed that my wireless signal would show as full (5 bars) but I couldn't connect unless I was right next to the router. Even then my connection speed was lousy. I searched around the internet for a month before I gave up and just connected over a lan cable.
A couple weeks ago, during a random search, I saw a comment for someone that had the same connection problems but with a different type of Acer computer. He said that the white antenna cable was supposed to be connected to "Main" and the black cable to "Aux". I opened up the back of my laptop, of course, and checked immediately. White was connected to "Main" and black was connected to "Aux" just like he said. I was bummed.
Just for fun I decided to swap the cables and see what happened. The difference was immediate. I could connect from anywhere in my house with high speeds. Problem solved! I actually started dancing...yeah.
I hope this helps someone else enjoy a really great laptop. -
I registered specially to say thanks. Trick with wires really works fine.
Those Acer guys really messed something.
I had the same problem and i was very upset about it.
I tried everything. Updated drivers, BIOS, tried different settings on my router, even installed Ubuntu as the second OS to check if it was Windows 7 problem. But nothing helped. I had 1-2Mbps connection, which dropped constantly. I even borrowed USB wifi card from my friend to finally check that built-in card is not working good.
Now i'm enjoying this great powerful notebook))

I stumbled over the solution just by accident. Open your acer by removing the lid under the pc. (6 screws) If you place it with the front pointing towards you you will find the intel wifi link placed pretty much in the centre of the pc. (placed between the harddrive and the battery) It's a small card, no larger than a matchbox in size. Connected to this card you will find 2 cables. One black and one white. Switch them. There are a tiny plug on each of them, so you might need a tweezer. Once you've done this you've solved your problem)
