You can try to apply thermal paste to the GPU or purchase a cooling pad. With regards to your video card, you're pretty much stuck with the 8600M GT because it is soldered to the motherboard.

It is soldered. All laptop graphics cards are on-board.

I can confirm that your laptop has a MXM-II slot. You can upgrade to either a HD3650 or a 9600m GT.

100% not true. If you have an MXM slot as mentioned you can upgrade, not easy, but possible. If you have integrated graphics then you have no chance of upgrading as this is soldered to the motherboard.

With regards to the overheating, you can try a cooling pad which will help, but you could also try undervolting you CPU, this could lower you temps by quite a bit, there is a good guide here at NBR regarding this:

    One other suggestion.
Clean out the air vents of your laptop.
It's possible the laptop did not overheat because of the gpu (even though it's a very good possibility because 8600 is notorious for having an overheating issue and dying before it's time).

If your laptop has an MXM II slot (and I think it does), you will be able to upgrade the gpu up to 9650m GT.

Another note ... soldered gpu's can be un-soldered if you are crafty enough and know what you're doing.

If your laptop is still under warranty, then Acer should replace the gpu for free or provide you with an equivalent (say ATI mobility radeon 3650 GDDR3).

Which gpu is inside your laptop anyway?
Also have you tried cleaning out the air vents with compressed air?

    I can.

This is the 8600M GS DDR2-256MB in the Acer 5920G.

    Thats MXM-II as well.

Upgrading to a 9600M GT or HD 3650 GDDR3 won't give you a huge increase in gaming performance.

If you can overclock these cards well, it'll be ok, or just get a new notebook with a high-end GPU.

Andy, you sure? A 1000+ point jump in 3DMark06 from an 8600M GT DDR2 to an 9600M GT GDDR3 seems like it'd make an impact, thanks to the extra memory bandwidth.
The Radeon HD 3650 makes less of an impact in that benchmark, at least.

I have ACER 5920 with Windows XP Professional SP3 with AcerEM_Acer Empowering framework_v2.3.4001_XP loaded.

I want to load Acer eRecoverymanagement. Which version of eRecovery Management I should load?

The GPU you buy will be an OEM part and may not come with a good warranty, and the price will be easily over $200. Better get the 8600M GT fixed/replaced from Acer, if the notebook warranty is still effective.

You can upgrade your VGA card. Its MXM 2 type & you can go upto 9650M GT .

Monitor your GPU & CPU temps
CPU shouldn't go over 75c, GPU shouldn't be over 95c while gaming and over 60c-65c while not

you can reduce temps by using RMClock utility to reduce CPU voltage
also you can put some thermalpaste on your CPU and GPU core as that should reduce the temps by up to 5C
