Hey guys. first of all, just want to say this is a very cool site. I cant believe how many active members there are... amazing!!!
so I have an Acer Aspire 6920 laptop. I have had it for 3 years now. Same olf story. the power plug in used to work fine, then it was kinda fidgety, now its gottan worse to the point where it only works 50% of the time. I spend more time adjusting it and doing weird things to it to get it to work for 15 seconds then flicker on and off.
it is starting to drive me crazy. I need your guys help!!!
how do I fix this? I am not the best with computers, but im "smarter than the average bear" and im sure I can figure it out if someone here can give me a "how to" on what I need to do... I dont have any special computer tools (soldiering gun, tiny phillips screwdriver, etc..) but I will go buy the necessary things required in order to get this power jack working again.
OR, is there somewhere I can bring it and have them fix it for like 60 or 70$ at the most?
I paid 1100$ CAD for this computer in 2008. the guy at staples told me it was their best computer (which pretty much was) and it was newly released and everyone wanted it. I dont regret buying it it is a very nice laptop IMO.
is all else fails.. I will go buy a new laptop (acer 8920!!! but I really dont want to have to do that over a power jack![]()
thanks, appreciate it.

You could always locate the 6920G Service Manual, figure out what part is wonky, and replace it yourself, but that's a fiddly job if anything. I've upgraded the hard drive, CPU, and RAM on my system, but never touched the power circuitry.
Otherwise, you should contact Acer to see if they can repair it; it'll be out of warranty, but at least they'll do it right. -
If your lucky it may just require resoldering... the solder around the socket may have cracked.
If not and unless you are used to working with electronic stuff it might not be as easy as it looks to remove it. The cost of a new socket is peanuts... it's the rip off labour charges that cost so much.
Always treat the plug/sockets carefully when connecting... they are fragile... so always insert and remove carefully and not at an angle etc -
ok I fiddled around with it last night. my anger/lack of patience got the best of me.
I was too rough with the plug in and the black cable ended up getting ripped off the plug. I think that was the faulty part anyways... it was barely connected and giving me problems.
so I am running on the remaining 10% battery that I have left (I need a new battery also!!). I was able to get a bunch of computer store numbers which I will call later today. hopefully they can fix it fast or else ill have to but a cheap 2nd laptop while this one is getting fixed
thanks for the help guys -
so was it only the lead for the power adapter then? that is an easy search on ebay.
if you get a replacement battery, look for the 4800mAh (ebay), better than standard. i keep my old one in when on a/c (most of the time) and just swap when travelling. old/original one lasts less than 6 mins now
ps. i think your sig was asking for troublehow about starting again as ''lucky guy''
also, check out the 6920 owners lounge

lmfao this is great.
so, I went to adjust my bed sheets and what do I notice? the plug in the wall is 3/4 of the way out!!!!!!!!
so I basically took the power adapter apart, and ripped the ground cable off for nothing!!! kinda angers me a little bit, but im super glad to have figure it out (kinda)
the black cable (I assume is the ground) is not connected (I pulled it off accidenly). it has to be soldered back on which I will get someone to do tomorrow. so I just gotta make sure the little tab on the power plug in where the black cable used to be is touching any metal on the computer (something I learned from welding hehe) and it powers right up lol!!
feels good to have fixed the problem
thanks guys -
also, I should ask. what exactly kills the batteries?
isnt it a crust or something that builds up inside of the battery, and its formed from not draining the battery enough. I thought I was cautious and emptied the battery once in a while (2 or 3 weeks) but obviously not enough. -
Deep discharging does in fact kill Li-Ion batteries.
Apart from that, any battery will fail. Some fail after a few months, others last several years. There is no general rule, unfortunately, apart from "Don't deep discharge".
