    Bah, that requires a sub. Can you post the top 10 list?

    It's pretty funny that most people in the US have never heard of them. Funny what a couple million in marketing will get for you.

    Acer climbs 2 places to be no 5 PC maker

    Q1 growth of 36.5% higher than its 4 other rivals: report

    (TAIPEI) Acer Inc, Taiwan's third-largest computer company by market value, rose to the No 5 rank in global personal computer market share as its shipments outpaced its four larger rivals, market researcher IDC said.

    Acer took a 3.3 per cent share in the first quarter with a 36.5 per cent increase in shipments compared with the same period a year earlier, Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC said in a report on its Web site.

    No 1 Dell Inc, with an 18.6 per cent market share, had the second-fastest growth with a 28.2 per cent jump in shipments. Japan's Toshiba Corp dropped out of the top-five rankings.

    Acer in November said it expected to rise two places to become the world's No 5 PC seller in 2004, overtaking Japan's Toshiba and NEC Corp. Acer last year re-entered the US, the world's largest PC market, through agreements with retailers such as Best Buy Co.

    Acer also aims to double sales this year in China, the world's second-largest PC market, with a revamped distribution network and more spending on advertising.

    'Acer's success in Europe is sustained,' IDC said in the Web site report. 'The company continues to have difficulty making headway in the US.'

    Acer gets about two thirds of its sales from Europe, which IDC said remains one of the world's fastest-growing PC markets because of strong business demand and the improved buying power of the euro, which has risen from a low of 1.03 to the US dollar on Jan 2, 2003, to a peak of 1.28 on Feb 17 this year.

    No 2 ranked Hewlett-Packard Co took 15.6 per cent of the global PC market with a 15.8 per cent increase in shipments, followed by International Business Machines Corp with a 5.5 per cent share and 20.4 per cent growth in shipments, IDC said. No 4 Fujitsu Siemens Computers Holding BV lagged the top-five PC makers with a 15.4 per cent increase in units shipped. - Bloomberg

    =======================>

    Overall, Acer has been quite successful over the years in EU. So far Acer has invested $60 million for Acer Provost Formula one Team as well as reported $100+ million for Team Ferrari as well as becoming its official supplier. Nevertheless, still no luck in USA yet. I guess there is still a long way to go in order for Acer's pdt be competitive enough to challenge the big boys, such as Dell. Of course, good marketing will always help a bit.

    It's time to sponsor NASCAR!!!
