By seen more and more cry out messages about ACER laptops and Win 7 ,
I got forced to start this thread , so to learn what are the feelings of
the other valuable contributors , who offer for free , their time and energy , in order to help other ACER owners , who had mostly hard times because they are not knowledgeable enough .

Windows 7 , its an experimental OS , and as such , every one who deals with it , it belongs to the testers category ..

The last thing that I wish to see , are ACER owners with legal OS and operational laptops , to start destroying them , because of they are eager to try on , something experimental .

Should some one do , a sticky Warning thread about Win 7 , so the ACER community and owners , to avoid destroying their laptops ??

Or we should stay silent ?? and just watch the nags staking up ?

As long ACER has no official support about Win 7 , me as contributor ,
I have start to feel that I have to become a magician , in order to solve the unsolved .

I would feel better , if it was a sticky warning ... Informing ACER users - owners , that the current Win 7 picture , does not worth the trouble getting involved with it .

    Thats my 0.2 EUR

Actually, Windows 7 is a Release Candidate. It is far from experimental.

I do agree that people who use Release Candidate 1, are not using a final/stable Operating System, but saying that it can destroy a laptop, is ofcourse just plain silly.

Furthermore, it's a fact that many solutions/drivers/software for Vista, will work for Windows 7.

Consider creating a thread which states that Acer does not officially support Windows 7 at this time, explaining that any problems they encounter, are their own, and not Acer's responsibility.

What bothers me , about the ACER owners , that they destroy the HDD structure , partitions and files , hidden and not , that they are unable to restore it, even if they wish to return back to it .

The luck of drivers , will force them to go back , and then , they will start struggling again , how to partially make them functional .

I insist, that its our obligation to inform them about it .

At the end , we all know that Microsoft , sooner or later , it will demand a price tag , for them .

The people who will deny to pay it , they will become a pack of people with illegal software , and then , what will follow , are tips of how to hack them .

If the public never tested a new piece of software, whether it is an operating system or anti-virus, we would have to wait a hell of a lot longer for it to be released, and we would probably be stuck in the stone ages in comparison. Also, if the testing was left to the software company, they would have to hire a lot more poeple to test it which would make the end product a lot more expensive.

So basically what you are talking is complete rubbish.

    " complete rubbish "

If you do not find for me , one Vista version that costs as 20 EUR ,
you are the one with the rubbish stuff .

ACER needs as 70 EUR to restore the software on their laptops .

And Microsoft needs about 120 EUR , for one OEM XP pro version .

We talk about money loss here , its not an flaming thread , about OS lovers .

Far from it!!! Also I've installed Windows 7 in a virtual desktop and didn't have to mess with all the Acer hidden restore files. I did a system restore awhile back and forgot to disconnect my external drive and it formatted the drive and renamed it Acer and copied some system files there.

If you read my post and understand it properly, I'm not taking about acer recovery disks, oem xp disks, or 70 euros here or 30 there.

Your saying, don't use windows 7 at all.

I'm saying, if people don't test it we will never have new operating systems at the level we have now, and they will cost a lot more money than they do now as people have to be paid to test it, and it wouldn't be 2 or 3 people it would have to be thousands.

I'm not loving any OS, or starting a flaming war, but you don't seem to understand the concept of progression.

I don't think that's needed, or will help anyone. People who are willing to install W7 and destroy their original OS will do it anyway. When a person buy a laptop he can do whatever he/she wants with it. If later on they face problems they come to the forums and ask for help. You and any other member are free to respond...or not. I also think these W7 threads are somewhat irritating, especially the drivers questions - with a beta OS with no drivers of it's own it's all based on luck. So I normally don't really try to answer threads like this but this is just me.

The bottom line - we can't protect the Acer owners most of them come AFTER the damage is done anyway. We can only try to HELP them afterward

If one don't know what exactly they're doing, they should stick with a well establish product instead of using beta and RC products. Established products will have much of its bugs patched and there will be much more help available.

For me, Windows 7 driver are a pain in the @ss on my netbook. In the end, i have to mod drivers own my own to make it more stable and compatible with windows 7.

I think users accept the risk of using Win 7 beta or RC, esp since it does not upgrade directly from XP. I went ahead and cleared the Acer partitions anyway when I got the machine, preferring a clean install of the OS.

I don't think there's any problem here any more than installing other OSs.

Hi, you'll aways get owners like this, there're of the same philosophy that claims going from vista to xp gives them some kind of speed boost, when infact all it is milliseconds...

Well, Chris, time is one of the most important things in electronics and especially computers - A 500 milliseconds cut from here, a 600 milliseconds reduced from there and you have almost a whole second saved which, actually, is a big deal. Some people are getting payed a loads of money to do that - AMD, Intel, Nvidia etc..
That was a little OT though.

    On topic:
I think testing W7 is great, I'd do it myself if I had the time to do so. If some people experience problems with the testing they are free to ask us and we're free to try to help them or not. Free world, free forum... :D

Have you ever heard "Papa don't preach"? j/k :D

Hi, in the world of F1 maybe I'd agree, but in the real world computing what's in a number? I used to chase gfx benchmarks once and my PC was in the top five fastest in the UK for a while. But then I realise it all meant nothing really, aside from a very empty pocket.
However, on topic, I've had w7 on my main pc since the first beta, although the RC is more of a 'finished' product RTM is now up to version 7127 http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/05/15/windows-7-build-7127-leaked . I only wish it had a better driverbase as my printer, that worked under vista, no longer has any drivers...

All Kiria is saying is this (I Think).

The Acer forum already sits with people moanng and about existing software and things that do not work properly with OEM stuff.

So maybe, in his own way he is trying to CAUTION people against just installing 7 and so forth.

    Just my thoughts.......

I know that he only means well. Many might perceive it the wrong way though.

I think we all get his point, what we're saying is that it's unrealistic to think that we can prevent this from happening. There are a lot not so tech savvy people out there which will try W7 no matter what we say. I think that the people who hang out around here are already somewhat aware of the problems they may face with a beta OS and most of the not-so-tech-savvy people will come AFTER the damage is done anyway.

was talking to a microsoft geek on The Code Project and win 7 started life as a vista service pack, but had to many changes to the core of vista.
so some bright spark at micro$oft saw the $ signs and thought about selling it as a new OS.
it has a few changes that use XP and Vista kernal parts, so it is more backwards compatible.
but as we all know, micro$oft will call it an all new OS.
still i've not used it,so will not comment on how it runs.

but talking to a few people that have its very fast and has done away with a few of the prefetch, indexing mem/cpu usage.so the hard drive isn't always spinning. like it is in Vista.

O.T. Thanks for the understanding , about my positive attentions . :)

I would never let , even the son that I do not have , to format the brand new laptop , because he decide to become OS systems hobbyist analyst .

Its all about protecting the little investment , called as laptop .

Yes many of as we are knowledgeable , but the many think that they are "computer Gods" , even if they do not have the cash , even to buy a sandwich for their Girl friend , the dad must do even that , by doubling their pin money .

All that I am trying to say are what TeeJay 44 all ready correctly guessed ,
one large CAUTION with Neon Lights around it . :D

The expert hobbyist tech , its another animal :)
They are few , they do not surrender ... they do not cry out in forums .
In simple words , they eat the lemon , with out tears . :D

The major point is that I never seen any speed improvements from any OS at list in speed , always the new are heavier and sluggish .

The only true gain is the system stability , that thanks God ,
from the Windows 2000 Pro and after , become very good , and the XP kept the same behavior too .

The mistake , that I like to point out , that many people do , its to load the latest OS , on they old hardware , thinking it as a welcome upgrade .
Or as a new reason to brag on their friends .

Any way , I said allot all ready , I think that I was obligated for an explanatory message , so to keep the demons of the misunderstanding,
    away from us . :)

No one have to agree totally with me , I just wrote my point , and that's all.

There is no need to format your laptop to install Win7 or any other OS for that matter. We don't want to be giving out misinformation now do we? A simple second partition for a dual-boot is easy to make and if you don't like Win7 or don't want to use it any more it is also very simple to delete the partition and stick with your original OS and life is back to normal.

I would recommend trying out Win7 to people who are sick and tired of Vista or were scared off by Vista and stuck to XP. But of course this is still only people who know the potential consequences and who tick the "I've read the T&C" box.

Another reason to I would recommend trying Win7 out now (when its free) is that when the final product comes along I'll want to buy it but not because I've heard so many good things about it but rather the fact that I've already used it and I know how good it is first-hand and I'm sure there are other people out there who think the same. And the final product can only be better (don't mess this up Microsoft).

Running win 7 x64 on my new 6930G here, only problem encountered this far is that I haven't gotten the bluetooth driver installed, the rest works like a charm.

Going to install ubuntu to(didnt have a blank cd here), have anyone of you installed the newest ubuntu on a 6930G? If so could you please post your experience(s)?

And I destroyed all partitions and removed all acer mess before installing ^^.
(Really hate messy bundled crap and these restores stuff, just makes a big mess and makes the job of any laptop thief to easy..)

Edit: There is one problem, but which I think is linked to the hardware. When connecting the laptop to a sound system with 2 speakers it seems a bit "off". Didnt connect the pc to the system before I nuked the bundled vista x86 though. By off I mean that the sound seems a bit displaced, the sound is also slightly crappy compared to my other computers. Forinstance my old kn1 notebook puts out alot better sound and ofc my pc with a SB is best.

"A simple second partition for a dual-boot is easy to make"
sorry to disagree but that is way beyond many people here crying for help after theyve formatted their new lappy. win 7 it is still not official release and not supported by acer, can we have a locked sticky at the top with these facts, and just a few links to eg: how to backup your new laptop, dual booting, acer drivers, and the windows 7 forum. questions here can be answered or just refered to sticky.

There is a common misconception that you must format your laptop to install a new OS and this is what I would like to remove. I don't agree with anyone trying to scare people away from Win7 but I agree that people should be advised with what they are getting themselves into. I also like the idea of a sticky.

I really don’t understand what this fuss all about is. I have been running Win 7 in dual boot with vista since the first public beta and now installed the RC and its working perfect. Also most (not all) of the vista drivers are compatible with Win 7 as well.

And you don’t have to format vista nor the hidden partition to install Win 7. I mean the first thing I did when I got the laptop is formatted the C drive and installed a clean vista without all the bloatware from Acer and the laptop booted like 15-30s faster. RMClock is so much better at controlling the speed of the CPU than Acer Epowering tech or how the hell it’s called. And the other stuff are pretty much useless. So if you wanna keep your laptop at stock settings go ahead and do that but I will constantly strive to keep my system optimized and squeeze out every bit of performance out of it I can get. I mean where would we be now, if we as humans would be satisfied with what we had and didn’t try to improve things.

I think this is a great chance for everyone to try out a new OS for free and decide on their own if they like it and buy it when it gets out or not.

OP gave out the warning with good intentions to the novice users, I do appreciate it.
W7 is so similar to Vista and I have decided to stay with Vista for sometime to come. Only difference is IE8 in W7 behaves better than in Vista.
Someone inquired about Ubuntu 9.04, there are some cosmetic changes like GUI, new version of Compiz 8.2 but I prefer 8.04 for it's stability.
