    Acer Specs...(purchased in 2006)
    Acer Aspire 5112WLMi
    Turion 64 X2 @ 1.66 GHz and 521kb Level 2 Cache (the TL50 Processor)
ATi X1600 card with 128 dedicated and 512 (shared) total graphics mb.

This 'top' worked flawlessly for a year or so, meaning... I played fps games on high configs... but lately, i've been having some graphic issues...

The game runs fine for about 15 min and then suddenly the frame rate decreases to 1 or even 0.5...this continues for 20 seconds and then normal frame rates resume for about 5 min... and then the process repeats... the vent heats up like crazy...
Now I do own a PS3 and an XBox 360, but sometimes I do prefer classic games(meaning 2006-07) on good old faithful...

    Please Help...

    Welcome to the forums.

Have you tried opening the lappie and blowing out dust that could be restricting airflow?

make sure when you clean the fan,
    1 the power is removed
2 the battery is also removed.
3 also make sure when playing games the air flow under the laptop has a clear path and the laptop is on a solid surface (tea tray or cooling pad).

    good luck
    Phil :D

Now I have tried out the following...
    1) Opened the 'top' and used compressed air cans and an old toothbrush to clean the vent, radiator and fan...plus the processor underpins... as well as the RAM housing.
    2) Reformatted the **** thing several times (thinking it was a software issue)
    3) Bought top antivirus software (thinking it was a virus that just won't quit)... and also turned off windows auto updates (so it won't interfere with my online gaming)

    BUT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS

Now at first I thought of putting an auxiliary laptop cooler... but the local IT guy said that its probably my HDD... he said that there might be a damaged sector in it thats causing the problems.

Now if I go and install a new HDD, will the recovery disks that I burned (as the system asked me to at the very beginning) help in bringing the system back to factory default i.e. with all windows OS and respective drivers installed ?????

you could try and download a hard drive tester software of some sort and actually test and see if there is anything wrong with the harddrive. Yeah the recovery discs you burnt should work fine.
