I was raised on IBM keypads and basically spoiled. Love the firm feel of the keys. I'm looking to get a new laptop and was looking @ the Travelmate 8100 and the Aspire 2020...I noticed the Travelmate has that weird curved keyboard and was wondering if anyone noticed that it interferes with how they type. I'm starting law school in the fall and will be doing ALOT of typing and need something with a firm responsive keypad. I would do IBM again, but looking for a widescreen machine with a glossy screen for the occasional break in between classes. $$$ isn't an option really since I have around $2200 to work with..just portability, decent battery life (3.5+ hours), and solid feel...hopefully with a PCI-E graphics chip as well.
Please sound off if you have any experience with Acer and IBM keypads and can compare the two

Have used Thinkpads and haev recently purchased a ACER TM8100.
The two machiens are simply in diferent leagues. To match the ACER in spec terms you would be looking at well over twice the price! To match it in quality terms, I have found very few laptops that come close to matching IBM on quality.
The trade off... spec vs quality.
In hindsight I would pick quality as a lower quality machine has the potential to go wrong and let you down and from my experience, ACER customer service is apalling, not something I would wish on you if you have an urgent assignment to get in. Whilst I havent experienced IBM customer services, I have heard and read nothing but good things.
The curved keyboard on the ACER just takes a little time to get used to, but isnt a problem.
If you are on a budget, the IBM at the spec you want may be out of your price budget in whcih case you need to decide how much you need the best spec!
Hope this helps -
Hav to admit this acer keyboard sucks when compared with ibm, Having used thinkpads i find it very difficult . The main reason is that they r soft & dont give you proper response, hence results in missed key every now and then .
BTW: Have any one tried changing the acer keyboard with firm one -
I haven't tried the IBM. My previous machine was a Compaq vo and the keyboard on that is very good. we now have 2 Acers a 1353 and a 1693 and I'm impressed witht e feel of the Keyboard, and the overall impression of quality. I tried a Sony Vaio for a couple of weeks and would have ecpected it to easily out class Acer, but I think the Acer keyboard is better than the Vaio
