I am looking to buy a new laptop but am very particular with what i want. Acer makes a 15.4" laptop that i really like but am questioning the quality of their product. I see that the build quality on the acer's are failry poor, or average at best. For a $2000 laptop i would like to see better quality. How is the stability of the system? Are internal parts like LAN, bluetooth etc decent? Are they quirky laptops? Most important, would you buy another acer???? Thanks.

I have owned two acers (including my current tablet) and have not had any problems with the internal parts. Acer's screens are a bit washed out, but the newer models are probably a lot better.

THe build quality is another issue. I don't think the plastic/painting is as well done as other companies, but this is just my experience.

My reasoning on why Acer is cheaper is that their customer service-tech support is probably the worst ever. If you are really good with computers, then you won't really need the tech support, unless a part needs to be replaced under the warranty...so all in all, I like acer machines.

Was just doing a little research and stumbled upon this thread, and felt the need to reply.

I think ACER gets a bad rap for really no good reason. People often cite that they are cheaper so how could they possibly be as good, but I would recommend any of their machines without hesitation. I have owned probably 5 of their machines over the years, and currently have 3 in my possession. And I can honestly say I have not had one problem (HW or otherwise) with any of them. My Ferrari 3200 in particular is built like a tank (its been dropped more than once and still runs perfectly without a scratch on it). I agree that the IBM/Levono notebooks are nice machines, but you pay top dollar for that, and I really dont think the extra money is justified.

I have also had the dis-pleasure of owning an HP and Toshiba laptop, and both were nothing but headaches. And tech support? Completely useless in both cases. As with most tech support, they tried blame my problems on software, when in the end, it was my failing motherboard. I have not had the occasion to call Acer's tech support, so I really cant comment on that.

Just my 2c. :) (and no.. I dont work for Acer).

Lol, IMO Acer isn't bad. Infact, I'm trying to sell my laptop, and I just don't see any deals out there that are as good as the Acer. But then again, I already have an Acer - a 5672WLMi w/ X1400. Heck, I might just end up keeping it for the rest of my life :p

I was doing a little work last night and the top scratched barely. I was carefull and all but it still happened. The over all build quality isnt bad/terrible or outstanding. More like average to me, but it has been by far the best pc I have had to date (the only reason it beat my averatec is the x1600 and core duo)

I've been happy with mine. Haven't had any failure of any sort. The case is still in good shape and I take mine between home and work in my computer backpack every day for over a year. As mentioned the screen is a little darker then I think it should be but the new ones fix that.

We have several Acers at work as well and they seem to holding up ok. One got the locking latch broke, it fell onto a concrete floor from 3 feet. It took a bit to get the right part but in the mean time the laptop kept working.

I have a acer and really i dont enjoy it its not that theres problems it just does not suit me i like to do gaming on my acer but most of the time it doesnt work so if you are a gamer i suggest getting a apple because thats what i am getting and it is alot better for the gaming but other then that you should get one i would say the price is worth it but there might be some problems with it.

PS. Dont get vista with it its horrible vista gives you so much problems

Question - How is a apple better for gaming? I don't think gaming differs between the different manufacturers, but differs between the components used, most notably the graphics card.

@Darrick - I think Donvito is a apple fanboy. There is NO way that an apple will ever be better for gaming. With the price of an apple computer you can get a much faster laptop for $800 less in some cases (M1530 vs MBP). In addition, the MBP gets WAY too hot to game comfortably on. Just ignore him.

    just my oppinion...

but i own the CHEAPEST ACER laptop ever sold... and i love it
wish i had 5 more of these....

sure there are better built laptops out there,,, but as far as bang for the buck.. Acer makes laptops that are a great price for the technology you get... just do your research reguarding the model you are thinking of buying.
