    Hello everyone,

All of the acer notebook reviews I read say they are a great deal provided you do two things:

Switch vista to XP (which is easy enough even for me to do)

    and upgrade the RAM

Now my question is, is upgrading the RAM difficult, and how exactly would I go about it? I don't want to buy one of these things and break it trying to make it work well.

I also read in one review that after upgrading the RAM you should change the bios settings to allow more memory for video; how would I do this? I've never messed with bios settings before.

Changing RAM is one of the simplest upgrades, and it can offer quite a good performance boost. On most notebooks, there will be a panel on the underside of the notebook, under which the RAM is located. Removing this, will grant access to the RAM modules. The manual of your notebook should also offer more information about uprading. Please can you tell us the model you have, and the current amount of RAM. This is because notebooks have different RAM modules, and you need to right one to upgrade.

Your notebook accepts DDR2 SODIMM memory. That particular memory is very easy to find and is priced very well. An upgrade to 1 GB should give you a good boost. Because your notebook comes with 512 MB already, and your notebook has two memory slots, there could be two 256 MB modules installed. Its unlikely, but its not impossible. To check this, doenload a program called CPU-Z, and it will tell you whether you have one or two modules installed. If you have one, which is likely, then to upgrade to 1 GB, you wll simply need to find a 512 MB module, and install it.

If you have two modules, then to upgrade, you will need to remove at least one. Removing and installing modules is not difficult by any means. There are many guides on the Internet, which you can use, if you want more information.

the acer website lists the RAM on this model to be 512/0, so this means 1 RAM card is 512 and the other slot is free right? so I can just open it up and stick one in? And should the RAM be symmetrical (512/512) or can I just stick a 1gig card in the other slot?

and the slot will just have a screw that I take off or something?

Thanks for the help by the way zero.

If the website lists it as 512 MB in one slot, and nothing in the other, then your in a good posistion. Because of that, its probably best to purchase a 1 GB module, and install it. That will give you a alot more RAM, and the price of 1 GB modules are quite enticing. That video that q8phantom has linked, is quite good.
