This seems to be relatively "low profile" manufacturer, but I rather like the Travelmate 291.
Does anyone have any info on reliability and service of Acer compared to say Dell?

Acer is #1 in Europe and Asia, they're just not as big in the U.S. They are certainly reliable though.

One of our developers got the big honking 3 GHz 17" DTR Acer on Friday. It has already died. It will not power on at all. He is getting it swapped today.

We were laughing at how big it was this morning. It looks like a samsonite suitcase and even has a full size 107 key keyboard. It would be sweet for Lan parties.

That said, I would buy a 2000, 2010 or 2020 series in a heartbeat. Acer is one of the largest manufactuerers and their warranties will get you global coverage. I have only heard and read good things about Acer.

Some hardware failures are inevitable - it is how they are handled that really counts.

Acer are coming on strong in N. America. I think they will be challenging Dell and HP in a few years - if not sooner.

Everyone is goin gto produce notebooks that die, the key is how Acer, in this case, handles it. Did they take care of your co-worker?
