I do have to ask, but HOW? Every Acer I have ever touched has been made of cheap flexible plastic.

They are the #2 notebook seller, not notebook designer.

Acer = cheap, affordable, and often on sale at BB for under $500.

Dell = arguably better designed / more durable, but much costlier.

This is a disposable society of "most bang for your buck." Acer really fits the bill there. Is my Extensa 5620 as solid and tough as a Dell? Probably not. Did I pay hundreds less, which is what I could just barely afford anyway? Definitely. For better or worse, people buying laptops look at system specs, not a durability score. And the price allows those with lower budgets to purchase laptops, opening up the sub-$500 bracket to Acer... when used laptops are selling for $350 on Craigslist, you can occasionally get a new Acer for $50 - $100 more. I haven't seen Dell manage that.

Don't forget : Acer is Acer, Gateway, & eMachines now.

That pretty much accounts for almost half the shelf space at your local retailer.

Also, while the XPS are solidly built machines, the Inspirons that I own are no better built that my gateway and acer.

And look for Dell's construction quality to drop as they attempt to push more over the counter units via walmart and best buy.

Remember the consumer marketplace is driven and ruled by cheaper, faster, better. Anyone can tell you that you can't have all three, so one of the three always suffers at the expense of the other two.

They will start gaining more market share with their take over into the retail market of stores like best buy.

Because Acer is cheap.. and therefore more affordable to a variety of people.. plus you can find Acer in pretty much any electronics store. If nothing else they've done well in making their products widely available. Anything that is widely available at low cost is obviously going to equal high sales.. but you get what you pay for. Quantity and quality are not married in any stretch of the imagination. Just because a larger number or poor people have fallen victim to Acer does not make me respect them more

Plus Acer is like three companies now.. are they talking Acer brand name or Acer/Emachines/Gateway because if you include all THAT they should be #1 I'd think..

How does it matter ? Unless you are playing soccer with your laptop !!
Processors /Motherboards are made by Intel/AMD and its subsidiaries, LCD screens are either Philips/LG/Samsung. HDD by WD/Seagate/samsung/Toshiba.

What remains is the body ? Why pay hundred more for the body ? Anyway, with technology changing so fast, you have to buy a laptop every 2 yrs. And even cheap plastic body lasts 2 yrs.

I just returned a Dell XPS 1530 as it had horrible grainy screen and I am pretty happy with my Acer.

I could have predicted this was going to happen, acer are on the way up. I agree with doctorsrk all notebooks are just a combination of parts from different OEMs.
Why is there so much acer hate in here? I have 2 of them and cheap plastic or not they don't give me any trouble. Maybe the Dell owners are just jealous.

I bought 3 Acers for work, TravelMate 5720's, maxxed out the spec at the time (2.2GHz, 2GB, ATI HD2500 etc) and they were around £600. They're pretty solidly built as well, there's a slight bit of flex towards the middle of the keyboard but that's it. You can pick it up by any corner and it's solid.

At the same time I've just bought a M1330 so we'll see how it fares.

5920G looks very cool sans its keypad and interior color. But what i liked very much is its outer design / internal specs and most of all a good price tag.

Hope acer will live up to everyone's expectation. Cheers !!

I have two Acer notebooks and think they are both relatively solid. I've used Dells and HPs/Compaqs (at work only) and they haven't impressed me as being superior in build quality than either of these two Acers.

I will say that my new Extensa 4420 seems more solid than my 2.5 year-old Aspire 1691. Part of this is likely that the new one is smaller (14.1" vs. 15.4"), so a little less weight.....but when I pick it up with one hand on the right side of the keyboard their is no flex to it. With my older Aspire I have to use two hands to move it as it will flex if picked up from one side.

I think a fair amount of the Acer hate is from non-technical people who have problems with their notebooks. They expect Acer to have good customer support (which would be nice if they did, but apparently it isn't always the best) and so are then disappointed when they have to call for a problem. I have never had to call Acer for a problem (call HP all the time from work for warranty support) and so it hasn't been an issue for me. Also, I'd rather pay less initially and figure I'm pretty much on my own then pay a fair amount more and know I have the security of good customer support. Of course it would be nice to have this, but if I have to choose I'll take bang for the buck and mediocre support over so-so specs/money and great customer support. Also I've heard "(insert PC manufacturer here) customer support is the worst ever!!!" so I pretty much figure that part of this is due to non-technical people being frustrated by their machines not working and part due to actual bad customer service. Having worked at a help desk for more than a year, I feel I have a decent pulse on what good customer service is and so always try to do this......but some people make it really......REALLY....hard. ;)

    Great post SoFloAcer.

Look after your Acer and it will be fine: tech support will not be necessary anyway. Fiddling or abuse will however change things.

    Cheers,

I agree with Evolution. I have 2 Acers and I have NOT had any any problems with either. A lot of these parts that go into all laptops come from the same factory.
I have had more problems with Sony in the past than all the ones I have used.
