I have a 7551g-5821 and the screen went out on it today.

    I have two questions:

First how do I know what exactly went wrong with it. If the back light is bad then you still can see a faint light of what you are looking at but it is very dim right?

I have no visual at all, it is just grey. I currently have the laptop plugged into an external in order to use it, which works fine without any trouble at all.

Does this mean the back light itself is fine? If so what else can go wrong with a monitor to leave it with a blank grey screen like that and what needs to be replaced?

Second: Where can I get a screen/lid for the laptop? I assume that they are not incredibly expensive but I would like to avoid it breaking my wallet. It has the SEC3051 in it right now, where can I find this model or a similar one (HardwareID) to replace it with?

Sorry for the long post, just want to see what you guys know before jumping.

    EDIT: Lolgrammar!

This notebook uses a LED backlit display so there's no inverter and technically no backlight to fail. It may be a lid close switch or indeed a screen failure.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure it is not the switch because It was set up to turn off when the lid was closed. I can open the laptop and plug it into an external and it works fine, but if I close the laptop it disconnects from the external. My assumption is that the screen is bad. However I will check on the switch before I order it.

Where is a good place to get a replacement screen? Though I have worked on laptops quite a bit in the past I have never had a screen go bad on me so I don't have a legit supplier in mind. Price is less of an issue than reliability of the company, any suggestions?

Consult the sticky to find a service manual for your notebook, check FRU list for specific LCD models that have been used on you notebook and see what's available and for how much (eBay is a really good place)

I had a similar issue with my AS 8950G as the screen was black then it changed to a white/grayish tint but would display on an external. I concluded that because it displays on the external the graphics card and the mobo are fine. So I've assumed it's the screen or a part related. I purchased the laptop from Newegg and have 1 yr extended warranty and it was sent to be repaired.
