As you may remember I sent my laptop of to acer for the screen to be repaired, they wiped the harddrive, kept etremely poor contact and kept the laptop away from me for a mo nth. Overall, it was a horrible experience.

Not only that, it was a botch repair job and the laptop died soon after being returned. I had no choie but to return it to them, reluctantly. About 3 weeks go back before i hear anything, then I get an email saying it had bee shipped back to me. A few days later, it still hasn't come. then after a few emaisl to them moe I get a replying saying sorry, but the guy wo said that was mistaken, and it had in fact not been shipped out to me.

Then after another barrage of emails I hear they can't actually repair it, and want to replace it to a new one. And of course, they won't swap the old harddrive in. There was no way I could back everything up this time as it died completely so soon after i got it back. This is unbelievable. I then get an email saying I can buy back my own property from them(ing warranty), which later turns out to be a lie too, I can pay £40 to have 4 DVDs backed up off it. 16 gigs from a 250 gig HD. Oh, joy.

I don't know what to do at this stage. Because they outright lied to me and have jerked me around this much, and the damage was their fault, I think I might have something I can stand on. This is absolute insanity and I can't see how anyone involved is an actual human being.

I want to know what I should do. A guy in my house who worked for apple said i should find a cheap solicitor and get them to send a letter, as big companies don't have time to deal with that kind of thing, and i'd at least get it back quicker.

I hate to appear unsympathetic*, but I have to say that if you value the data on it, it is downright common sense to keep regular backups of your machine - not when it's about to go wrong.

However going along with the general attitude, I'd demand the machine or the HDD back to back it up before the new one is sent. It's not something they have to do but you could reasonably argue it given the inconvenience to you over the twice-repair period, and that you didn't have time to back up after the first repair.

*Disclaimer: if you read my other posts this could well be a sight deviation from the truth

    Hi to both.
Backups are always good, I always have a copy of my clothes before I wash them as if the machine goes faulty and I can't get my clothes out and the machine has to go to repair...

...you probably get my point - I'm on your side :)

The other thing is that this "end user" forum is full of us stupid idiots - that's you mainly :) and me. We're stupid becuase we know nothing! Surely Acer repair can come up with a solution to returning your data to you.

You need to get a human involved. Someone who can see your laptop, someone who is working on your laptop. Talk to them about a solution. Even try to have your old hard drive sent out to you - even if there is a cost. Don't go for a backup image of your drive on DVD as you'll probably be asking how to get the files you want off. It's quicker for them to just let you have the drive - get an external drive case - check to see if PATA or SATA.

Solicitor is good too but not sure how much that would be.

    1. You sent your laptop for repair - it's reasonable that you expected your property back. It's reasonable to say that you expected the contence of your hard drive to return too.

Tesco sell USB 320GB drive for under £50 - surgest sending them a usb drive to copy onto.

What stuff do you need and the location. Maybe help the repairer with path info and file types MP3 JPG RAW DOCX etc...

Keep cool (Diplomacy) and good luck :D

The laptop died nearly as soon as I could get it back. I sent it in to someone to back stuff up but he was only able to fit a small portion so i'm missing other files, which I didn't realise until later on when I got my portable HD back. I'm not going to reply to any "YOUR FAULT HURF DURF" responses.

Unfortunately these people do not respond to "cool" it seems.

I bought a USB HD alright, but I wouldn't trust sending it to them, no way. There'd be some other clause somewhere that means they get to keep that too.

There's no way the 250 gig HD is worth more than £50 to them.

Next time, confirm that all the data was backed up, before you send the lappy off to be repaired. You should be constantly backing up your data at regular intervals. Then explain to them, that you need the laptop back to retrieve you data, and that you will return it for the warranty replacement later.

Didn't this happen to you before?

I nearly wasn't able to get any way to back it up, at all, and the data was not returned to me until after the laptop was shipped. There was no way for me to avoid this.

Why do you presume people have the ability to back up off a dead laptop? Most people would not.

Either way, they lied to me about the status of my laptop causing me a lot of emotional trauma. I went from getting it back in a few days to NO YOU LOL. There must be a case to get a solicitor involved at this stage.
