An elderly friend has an Acer laptop, I cannot remember the model but it should not matter, the laptop definetely had S video but that is all I can rememebr other than it runs Windows Vista so that may help you age it, IIRC it is about 6 years old?
He needs to connect it to his new modern TV which has some red/white phono ports but all the rest is HDMI, any idea how this friend with ailing eye sight can be help.
many thanks

I would try sth like this cable.
This one is VGA to HDMI which seems a better idea than SVGA due to higher resolution. -
many thanks

It's HDMI with protective cover.

So another sale lost to ignorance of technology.
I have seen them on the net and can I assume the VGA lead carries sound as well as video? I seem to recall years ago plugging a VGA lead from laptop to another monitor which had speakers built in but I am not sure it got sound?
many thanks

No- VGA carries only video.
Which made me realize something. You would need a slightly different cable- with HDMI on one site and VGA and mini-jack on the other (not 3 RCA as in the previous picture)
So it would be easier to use HDMI to VGA cable for video and a separate audio cable. Either mini-jack to mini-jack (if TV has mini jack for audio-in) or of it doesn't mini-jack to RCA. -
Hmmm I did wonder. Thanks for the heads up, IIRC the new TV has an output for headphones but did not see one for input? Another point is he has a surround system which plugs into the phono plugs on the TV so there is connectors other than HDMI. I am poping in to see the guy tommorow ans will check out what he has on what device and get back to the forum
Many thanks

something like this might be the easiest for you and the friend.

Yep that's a great looking piece of kit, I have made some cable purchases I am going to try later in the week. I was amazed that the branch of Media Mart in Spain never had a clue what I was talking about (my spanish is not that bad!) and when I did find someone with a bit more IT knowledge it seems they have never stocked any method to connect a PC or whatever to a TV! I was lost for words that such a big company had in it's employ staff that were not trained in such matters and to add insult to injury the fact that having this kind of hardware in stock had not even been considerd by management! I popped into a local mega cheap chinese store and the spanish speaking chinese guy knew exactly what I wanted and had the cables in stock! The cables were cheap and may not give the right quality but they will enable me to see if it can be done with an ease that will suit my non IT friend.
Assuming this works and my friend can deal with it then I will go for the USB to HDMI converter which will be easier for him to use as it is even less cables.
So I think we can call this thread closed and I (along with my friend) would like to say once again thanks to all that helped, of course you know I/we will soon be back if we cannot get it to work.
Many thanks agian.
