I now know my Aspire 3100-1817 has a SATA Hd.

Any suggestions or experience with big drive replacements on 3100's?
    I'm looking at a 250 or bigger drive. Particularly vis-a-vie using a
    3.0 GB/sec drive in a 1.5 GB/sec system.

Anything out there better than Ghost for moving my system + files onto
    the new drive?

    Thanks

the Sata2 drive should work fine, might have to jumper the drive but very rare.

go with whatever drive is on sale.

ghost is good, macrium reflect works well, plenty of software out there.
