I am receiving media failure error on Aspire 5050. Telephoned Acer support to tell them of the error message. Tech guy I spoke to told me that I could replace the hard drive myself and it wouldn't affect my warranty as long as I didn't damage any of the other components in the laptop. Is this true?

I bought this Laptop from Littlewoods home shopping and I have accidently shredded the original invoice that came with the laptop. Acer requires a copy of this invoice, I have asked Littlewoods if they could send me a copy of the origiinal statement but I haven't heard anything from them.

Is it as easy to install a laptop hdd as it is a destop hdd? Thanks in advance

Yes, you can. And it's easy.

I don't know how back of Aspire 5050 looks like but on the new models it's very easy. Just open main cover in bottom. Just check do you have SATa or IDE hard disk. I guess IDE as it is older model.

did you register it W/ ACER when you bought it.... if so try the following:

call up TECH support tell them you are a technician yourself,, you have ran diags on the HDD and it has failed,,,, and that all you need is the HDD since you made the restore disks,,, you can switch it yourself,,, and reloading should be no prob for you..

they sent me a HDD without any problems... cheaper for them than shipping a laptop
