Acer Aspire 4730Z with Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter, how to tell if I am connected via wireless N to my router, router is set for b,g,n - there is no option for n only.

Speed says 300mbps, but the speed test I just ran after switching to this new router returns slower or equal speeds as with the old wireless G.

To take full advantage of Wireless N your equipment needs to transmit in Full Dual band.
In actual fact wireless N works best because it uses 5GHZ and 2.4GHZ for transmission.
Your equipment seems to support up to N half band only.

you are connected at N speeds. your speedtest was through the internet? If so, your 300mbps is already faster than your ISP connection to the internet. Wireless N will not make your internet faster, just your local connection.

for a real test, transfer files between 2 local clients, then you will see improvements.
