    I am seeing two different HD for the Acer 5050-5554 model at FS. I had one with Hitachi 5.4K SATA 8M Cache but was defective. I exchanged another one and it has a WD 1200UE(PATA 100 and just 2M Cache). The display model has a Hitachi one. I will try to get another one but I want to see if there is anyone can figure out from the serial number what HD may be in that particular one. Or just post your HD and serial number. Thanks.

    Btw, if you go to acer website, it only says you get a 5.4K 120G HD. Same at FS website. And spec may change anytime.

    Erm, SATA and PATA are different, make sure you get the right drive for your laptop. And for hard drive problems, just send it back to the Hard Drive Manufacturer for a replacement.

    Hitachi Serial Numbers are easy

    HxS aa bb ccG d ee ff

    HxS - Hitachi Product Name
    HTS = Travel Star (2.5")
    HDS = Desk Star (3.5")

    aa - Speed
    42 - 4200 rpm
    54 - 5400 rpm
    72 - 7200 rpm

    bb - no idea
    usually 10 for some reason (i'm guessing its a subtype)

    ccG - Capacity
    60G - 60G
    80G - 80G
    10G - 100G
    12G - 120G
    16G - 160G

    d - no idea
    usually 9 for some reason (my guess is another subtype)

    ee - Interface
    SA - SATA
    PA - PATA

    ff - no idea
    another subtype / revision, 00 is common.

    SO, HTS541010G9SA00
    Hitachi Travel Star (2.5")
    5400 rpm
    100GB
    SATA

    Sorry I wasn't very clear. Without opening the box, I can only see the notebook S/N, not the HD S/N. So I want to know the notebook S/N (or any other number). I also notice I have a Model No. "ZR3" on the box. Too bad I don't know much else about the 'defective' one.
