I have an Acer TM8104 2gb Ram (recent upgrade) about 2 years old. The LCD recently went and from several quotes it looks like it will be about $600 - $700 to repair.

I have since purchased a new Laptop - but am wondering what the general consensus is on an LCD repair ? If the computer lasts another two years I think it will be worth it.

However we are now getting close to the price range for a lower end new model and throw in a few hundred more and again I get a newer better machine.

I am undecided at this point - I did like the Acer (especially the Atheros wireless card I upgraded to Rock Solid) and I did just sink $300 for memory a few months ago. Still I can likely sell the parts and make a few dollars back and put it towards a newer low end laptop.

    Suggestions?

I would not spend $700 for a new LCD. Its simply too much.

Fair enough - however what I forgot to mention is my Daughter will be entering Post Secondary in the fall and she will likely need a Laptop so I will be in the market soon. My plan had been to give her the Acer ( light weight and powerfull) and buy myself a new one. I have already bought myself a new one.

So I guess I can spend $700 - $1000 on a lower end new machine that will meet her needs or spend $700.00 on this one which will more than meet her needs.

I am leaning towards parting it out (Wirelss Card / Memory / HD ) or maybe make is a stationary machine ( it works fine with an external monitor which I can pick up for a couple hundred ) ...

The real question is will a high end two year old machine fair better than a new low end machine for the next couple of years ?

I wonder if the AcerTM8104 would run Vista ?

Edit : Ummm with a new machine there is year warrently and all as well to consider .....

I hear that - it is $549 for the monitor $95 labor and taxes .... I thought it was high as well - albiet 3 different places quoted me the same price for the LCD - only difference was labor rates ... makes that $300 extended warrently I could have bought seem worhtwhile now haha (I never buy extended warrently and I am still ahead )

Yeah looks like an Ebay blow out for the parts I can salvage ........
