I bought a new laptop (Acer Aspire 7735G) two days ago, but when I'm working on it, or it's just on doing nothing it sometimes just restarts out of nothing.
And then when restarting the windows screen comes up asking me to start the computer in the safe mode or to perform a regular start cause the computer wasn't shut down properly.

Can I do anything about this?

    thanks

It restarts itself, because it gets to hot. Are you working on it, in the bed? Because the laptop gets choked if it isn't on a hard surface.

Check the power save modes , Hibernate and stuff.

    Disable them as test .

you are not the only one with this problem. i bought one of these from argos as did at least one other person who is also seeing the random shutoff.

    see here for that thread:

it's not likely to be heat as mine did it the first time just after booting from it's factory state.
it also rarely happens when playing games but if i browse the web or leave it idle.. bosh,
    off it goes.

it's a latent hardware or software bug. i thought it might be something related to the power saving modes but it's happened while i'm actively using it, while idle, and while loaded (once while playing a game)

That might be happening because of system failure. Unfortunately you don't see it because the OS automatically restarts the computer. You can disable that and you will see the BSOD, possibly, or something that tells you what was what failed and you might be able to correct it. From what you said it is probably the graphic drivers or any decoders. It can be anything even things that you wouldn't imagine to interfere with. It can be a video or a sound file requiring a specific codec, or website not compatible with your browser, or a game or even a printer driver that is checking the network. I had a similar problem once with the SecuRom after I had installed the Mass Effect. Bioware issued a patch for that.
To disable the automatic restart after system failure go Control Panel > System > Advanced System Properties > StartUp and Recovery Settings > and then untick the Automatically restart Box. Next time your PC will crash you will might be able to see the problem that is causing the system failure.

thanks for the tip. sadly it didn't help. after disabling automatic restarts, it still shutdown instantly with no error and restarts with a failed shutdown menu.
i would expect to see a bios overheat warning if the shutdown was due to a thermal problem but i suppose there's no guarantee there would be one.

i've been poking around the event viewer too but i've yet to find anything obviously related.
it's full of obfuscated garbage as you might expect from people who named their bug database a "knowledge base".

According to the thread on cd freaks, the problem is solved, acer have posted a bios upgrade on their site and several users on the cd freaks thread have reported the issue as fixed, which is fantastic news because thats the laptop that i'm waiting to be delivered.
