Help Guys!
I have the Acer 5315-2153 and yesterday I updated the bios to 1.33. The update went fine and restarted as it should. I used the computer for a few hours and then went to bed. I wake up this morning and it still worked good until I just closed the lid (ie put it in sleep mode) and when I went to awake it up (open it up and hit any button) it did nothing.
I held the power button to force it to shut off and when I hit the power button again it just flashed the cd-rom and spun a few times but nothing. I have no screen at all.
I've tried burning my current version of bios and using the esc+fn method to get it to read from the disk but its not working.
The laptop will shut off and I'll put the battery back in and hit the power button again but it just does the same thing over and over.
PLEASE HELP!

See if you can boot from CD.

unless i'm wrong the FN+ESC to start the crysis recovery of the BIOS is setup to work with a FLOPPY?? someone correct me if i'm wrong....
but as i understand it, you need to make a crysis recovery disk and include the BIOS VERSION you wish to go back to....
if you can't boot from a BOOTABLE CD,,, try booting to the HDD after removing the cd from the drive...
you might even try taking the BATTERY out and removing the AC POWER,,, then hold the power button down for 30 seconds...
then replace the AC POWER cord... and try to boot.... let me know what that does

thanks for the replies guys...no it doesn't boot to anything..just turns on and spins the cd rom.
I've put in the acer recovery disks, xp boot disk and regular xp pro install disk and nothing seems to work. It just spins it and stops.
how do i create a bios recovery disk? -
yep i think it shud be fine after a bios reset..
do what bigO says....but remember to remove all sources of power first....!! -
As Bigo says, Crisis disk is supposed to be used under an USB Floppy Drive.
If you don´t have one of those, you can try this alternative method which is done by Cd/Dvd drive. Take note:
This is known as a "BLIND FLASH" and the procedure is as follows:
1 - Download the latest (or the version you are after) from the Acer website.
2 - Extract the files from the archive that are for the dos update.
3 - Next, write a small autoexec.bat file using notepad containing "***.bat", which is the ".bat" file for flashing included in the previous download. Make sure you save it as "autoexec.bat" and not as ".txt"
4 - Using nero express (or any cdr program that can create bootable cd's) and start a new project to make a bootable disc.
5 - Put all the files from the bios archive (as explained in no2) and the autoexec.bat into the root of the new disc
6 - Click "burn disc" and use the native boot image within nero. I used english US Boot Locale.
7 - Finalise the disc.
8 - Put disc in affected Laptop. (Remember, this will only work if your laptop will switch on, fan noise, lights etc.)
9 - Switch off Laptop and remove battery and AC/DC Power cable.
10 - Whilst holding down "Fn + Esc", plug in the power cable, and switch on the laptop but dont let go of the keys yet.
11 - disc will begin to spin, fans will come on full speed, but no lights.
Release the buttons, wait a couple of seconds and press the buttons "Fn + Esc" again breifly, then wait for a good 5 - 10 mins.
12 - The laptop should shut down by itself, then once you switch it back on, it should recover itself and boot normally.
Hope this can help.
Kind Regards and good luck!!!! -
good info elbubi,,, i'm gonna have to link this to my 5315 info page
-
well i tried it with 1.40 to get the new one but that didn't work...i followed all the steps and it turned off on its own and i restarted it but the same thing. I think I'm just gonna have to send it to Acer.
Damn and the 1.33 loaded so well I thought I was home free.. -
have you tried the basic Alt+f10 recovery.
just a thought
Phil
just keep tapping them.
the wife was going mad today when her laptop wouldn't boot. she had the screen switched off.don't laugh -
im not to sure but under the ram on the 5315 there are two silver contacts. these dump the bios back to a default condition ?!
-
wouldn't work for me since I've erased vista and loaded XP Pro
-
sounds like you have fried the bios
not to sure if there's a way out of that.
sorry mate
Phil. -
XP or vista will make no difference to the CMOS
but i don't think it can roll back BIOS to previos versions... it just shorts out the CMOS battery incase some CMOS change you made INSIDE the BIOS is keeping you from booting.... you can short those pins and reset the BIOS to FLASHED defaults
correct me if i'm wrong.... but provide docs.... cause i hate to say in this instance i'm right

how about i send this to one of you guys and you can fix it and install an upgraded cpu..lol
-
you in the US??
i can do it -
im in england !

ok i dunno what happend but i'm posting from the acer laptop..
I gave up and called acer and they did the normal walkthrough crap and gave me a return number to send it back.
Since I updated the vista to XP Pro I had also dumped an extra gig of memory in there. Since I was gonna send it back to acer I decided to take out the extra memory in case they said I may of opened up the case.
So I take out the extra memory and while i'm at it i see the 2 silver post that hoggie had talked about and I grounded them while i was at it just to see if it really killed the laptop.
So I put the thing back together leaving the other memory stick in and hit the power button just for ****s 'n giggles and what do u know..the damn thing boots up as if nothing had happend!
I turn it off and put the other 1 gb of memory back in to see if it was the cause but no, after install it booted up just fine.
Here is another thing that I don't understand. I tried reloading three different bios while I was trying to recover this thing. I loaded 1.33, 1.34 and 1.40.
Before the comp went dead I had 1.33. I just checked the bios and now have 1.34.
So i'll leave it up to you guys to figure out what fixed it but its fixed.
Thanks for the help.
I'll be updating the processor shortly so i'm sure i'll mess this thing up again and come begging for help -
procesor upgrage is SIMPLE
see my guide
ASPIRE 5315 step-by-step CPU UPGRADE
let me know if your CPU socket is DARK GREY
bigO -
naw..checked it today when I changed the memory and its white....white like pink was good right?
-
if that is the case you are GOOD TO GO...
if it has 2 pin holes blocked then you may need to so a slight mod..
take your CPU out and see if you have 1 hole blocked (good)
of if you have 2 holes blocked then you may need a little mod
later,
bigO -
I think the HDD said good bye..
-
-
Glad to hear you solved your problem! VERY weird thing though...
Later -
call acer tell them your HDD crashed,... you have the RECOVERY DISKS and you just need them to ship you a replacment HDD... worked for me... got a NEW SEALED HDD in 2 days....
but i'd never send them a laptop when the item that has died is replacable by the customer...
plus theres no shipping costs for you if you have them advance ship the drive to you....
