    Hi
I have an acer 8930g and over the last 5 days I have tried windows vista ultimate 64 bit and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (official copy).

Everything works fine on the factory settings (vista HP 32bit) but on both those operating systems I get problems when watching blu ray disks.

At first I thought it was the disk, then the drive but now I have narrowed it down to either the OS or the drivers.

When I watch a blu ray movie with acer arcade or power dvd, I get a constant screeching sound (sort of like its raining or an old fax machine) and I really do not know what to do.

Has anyone else come across this problem? I have spend the last few days uninstalling operating systems and installing again, doing drivers and all sorts but got nowhere.

It looks like windows 7 does now have any 5.1 drivers for this laptop so I will have to leave that for now, but I really wanted to use a 64 bit OS to make the most of my ram, has anyone got a 64 bit version working ok? If so, where did you get the drivers from or how did you get it working ok? Have you tested watching blu ray movies etc?

    Cheers

I had issues with 5.1 sound and did this, don't if the same applies to 64bit though but it worked for me:-

Installed the new drivers from the Acer European support site.

I removed the sound card from Device Manager so none was available.

Installed the Nvdia display driver which also contains an audio driver.

    Installed the Realtek Audio driver.

    To adjust the volume properties:-

Right click on the volume control in the sys tray
    Select playback devices
Select properties on realtek hd audio
Changed the levels on all the speakers

I then changed the volume in arcade deluxe and hey presto!

    Hi

Cheers for the reply, ill give it a go.

Everything works perfect in vista 32 bit but I have a feeling I would make the most of my system with a 64 bit system.

Ill give vista 64 or win 7 64 one more go and try your method.

I have also noticed that when I update the acer arcade deluxe it goes back to 2 channel audio, has anyone else has this issue?

Bit annoyed after spending 1200 quid on a laptop for it to do things like this, would expect the sound to be a lot better than this. My speakers on toshiba laptop were much better than these 5.1

Honestly, the sound is fine! Just make sure you use the latest version from the website.

I was concerned at first but now I am very happy with it now.

    Hi
Installed win 7 64 bit ultimate again, this time I have not updated acer arcade and ignored the request and blu ray movies are working so far..

Sound is not as good as it should be though for what it is made out to be, quality of speakers are poor but they are good enough I suppose.

Next problem to sort out is my tv card, looking at your spec I dont think u have one? But if you do, how do you tune channels with the antenna provided?

You would have to use Media Center to do that. It should recognise the card, it should then just be a case of tuning it in.

it recognises the card but doent find any channels when using the antenna provided, works fine when plugged into house cable but that is used the the tv mostly although we do usually watch either sky or cable and not the tv freeview thing.

Most have little success with the tiny antennas provided with TV tuners. In general if you get anything tuned in it will be just a few channels with poor signal quality (lots of dropped frames). Roof mounted arials are always better, followed by boosted internal portable arials. The tiny supplied ones require a really strong signal.

cheer for clearing that up - i thought there was some kind of hidden "on" button!
I have seen indoor antennas with built in amp that have to be plugged into mains supply, i could give one of those a try I suppose.

The only time I think I would use it is if me and the missus are in bed and I want to watch something different to her, or if I go away and the hotel doesnt have a tv or we stay in a caravan or something! I might give one a go, they are only 25 quid anyway i suppose.
