    Hi all,
The video card on my vaio vgn-ar71m died recently and I'm looking for an inexpensive replacement capable of running Photoshop, In-Design, After Effects and cinema 4d with some gaming thrown in. I'm not too pushed on having games run on max settings but I'm looking towards Deus Ex 3 and Mass Effect 3. I found this this model and am wondering if anyone has any experience with it. How does the AMD Phenom 2 proc compare to the i5 and is the Radeon 6550 a decent mid-range card? Price is an issue so I'm really looking for best bang for buck. Ram is only 2gb I know but I intend on adding in the ram from the dead comp do that's not a problem.

Heat is also a bit of a worry for me as the last Aspire I had got so hot the chassis melted!

Also... Are the proc and video card in this machine upgradable or replacable should anything go wrong?

    Thanks in advance....

    No one?

How about the Phenome ii N950 CPU and HD6650 GPU in general? I've searched all over the interweb but can't find any reviews for either...

You would be better with Intel + HD6550 even if that wasn't SandyBridge.
Phenom is rarely faster than Core i5- it has to be a very specific task/game.
In most cases it's slower (but also cheaper).

Ideally I'd like to go with an i5 but at the moment the only i5 systems I can find locally in the same price range as the acer I mentioned above have all got onboard video. I'm pretty limited on the budget too due to some other upcoming expenses so basically I'm looking for a system that'll get me through a year or so til I can get something better. Also I don't want to get one online. I know it would be cheaper but I'm living in Croatia at the minute and haven't been able to get anyone here to honour the worldwide warranties I had on my previous 2 laptops so I'm gonna play it safe in that regard and buy here. So basically, I know an i5 would be better but how would the CPU/GPU combo of this acer serve me for say the next 18 months. As I said, it'll mainly be used for web, Adobe apps and gaming....

It doesn't look like you have a choice. It's not a bad combo- just the Phenom may hold you back a little which you may notice in gaming but it's still a decent piece of hardware.
