Anyone know where I can download the empowering technology application from?

Guess i'll try here as Acer seem to ignore support requests sent via their own site.

I purchased an Acer Aspire 5552 laptop last thursday, and recieved it the following day.

After checking it all worked, I upgraded it to windows 7 professional 64 bit by entering my already owned key into windows anytime upgrade.

Since the upgrade, I appear to have lost the Empowering Technology application that was preinstalled.

Would anyone happen to know where I can redownload this application from?

I have looked on Acer's download site, and the application only seems to be listed for laptop's that run Vista, and of course, this version of the application will not run on Windows 7 (I have tried).

I could do a recovery back to home premium (my recovery partition is intact, the alt+f10 function still works, and I have recovery disks for the machine), but I see no reason to run what I personally consider to be an inferior version of windows 7 when I have a licence for a higher version.

Hi. I had a similar problem with my 8930G which I cured by downloading the Vista ersion and then using the Compatibility settings on the launcher for the setup file. Set it to Compatibility for Vista, then Run as Administrator. It worked for me, might be worth a try?

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. The installer runs fine on Win 7, but once installed, the application will not open. I have tried opening it in compatability mode for Vista once it is installed, but for some reason, this doesn't appear to work.

I don't think it did anyway....i'll give it another go tommorow (need to redownload the installer again).

I find it highly strange that acer include this in the recovery image, but do not provide the installer for the windows 7 version on their own download pages.

Thanks, but it isn't power management that i'm looking for. It might help if I provide a screenshot:

Acer Empowering Technology Software Informer: Screenshots

The application that i'm looking for is near the top right, and has the buttons to get into the programs for burning recovery disks, power management, and also provides a link to get into a program that seems to allow bios settings to be changed via windows (boot order for example).

My fathers laptop (Aspire 9420 that I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium for him), still has this application, and as I say, mine had this originally, but lost it after doing an anytime upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.

I've also looked on my recovery disks, but cannot find it on there, so i'm guessing it's within the compressed image files on the disc.

I'm half tempted to recover back to home premium, then upgrade via anytime again in case it was just a fluke that caused it to get removed, but that's a hassle at the moment.

I had to run the installer in Vista compatibility mode as an admin to get it to work. As you found, just installing it and then choosing to run it in vista mode doesn't seem to be enough.

    Hi,

Some pieces of the preinstalled software is not available for download.

Since you were using Anytime Upgrade, the contents of the HDD had not been wiped. Also, I'd expect the upgrade to not remove any software that has been present on your computer.
That said, I'd suggest to search the start menu very carefully, perhaps you will find what you are missing.

    Other options are:
    - your set of recovery discs. Acer's recovery software does not only create a set of recovery discs, but there is also an option to create a "drivers & applications" disc which has the drivers plus the preinstalled applications (including the crapware).
    - temporarily configure your file manager to show hidden files and folders. On my 1810TZ, there is a hidden folder C:\OEM\Preload\Autorun which contains the drivers and preinstalled applications either. Name of that folder may be different for your system.

Michael Recycled is right, nothing might be missing from the Windows Anytime upgrade...Simply the App disapeared from the start menu. I also suggest you to look in your program Files, then just pin the program in the start menu by right click.

You should have created your Restore Dvds, and yes there's one named "Appdrv1" that might help you to recover.

    As I stated:

I have tried doing a non-destructive recovery, and this did not restore the application. I am aware that doing a full recovery would restore it, but I am assuming I would lose the empowering technology application again when upgrading to professional again.

I have also had the following reply from Acer support finally:

I have replied to this stating that I already have recovery disks, but that that is not the point, and I see no reason why doing an anytime upgrade should remove and already installed application.

I have also requested that they provide me with a download link to a windows 7 compatible version of empowering technology (my view is that as it is included with the default install, it must be available to download seperately from somewhere).

So simply check your recovery discs, especially your "Application&Drivers" disc, if these softwares are indeed no longer present on your HDD (which I doubt).

Not necessarily. Some software is licensed by 3rd party, and Acer might only be allowed to distribute them with a physical computer.
