    Hi

I currently have an acer 8930G which is now 2 years old. Its a quad core 2ghz q9000 processor, 4gb ram. I upgraded the HDD to 1TB and upgraded graphics card to 9700GT instead of 9600GS.

But it is getting slugging and even after brand new system install, I get fairly frequent shut offs (which I think are due to overheating) and slowness.

I am thinking of replaing it as it is a couple of years old now. The only reason I buy a laptop is because I have to be able to move it around the house so need a desktop replacement type, this 8930 has never been out of the house nor have my previous laptops!

I would want one with 18 inch screen, maybe another acer but are these new i5 and i7 processors a lot better than the one I currently have?

Anyway what models do people recommend? Acer or otherwise..

Will sell mine on eBay to go towards paying for new one too.

    Cheers

That's a lot for a refurb. Newegg here in the US has an 8943G for $1249 with i7 740QM and 8 gigs ram. Even after shipping and VAT the US bought one would probably be cheaper.

As 18" gaming laptops go, the Acer 89xxG series are the bargain machines, with good but not stellar performance. They have nice speakers, a nice big bright medium contrast screen with good viewing angles for about 2/3 to 1/2 the cost of the more expensive gaming rigs. The three fairly common machines it competes directly against are the Clevo/Sager/Deviltech, the Alienware 17, and the Qosmio 18" machine. Also MSI and Asus make some capable gaming rigs too.

Look up reviews on those machines. Some are faster for more money, some are a little less money but much smaller like a 15" Clevo/Sager machine.

You won't be playing games on low settings on an 8943G or 8950G anytime soon, but maybe you'll get 28fps when someone with a rig that costs twice as much is getting 60fps.

If you want the fastest, or one of the fastest gaming rigs, there are many choices that are up to twice as fast with dual gfx cards. Sager/Clevo, Alienware, and Qosmio can all come with dual fast GPUs. Supposedly the 8943G was designed for dual cards, but I've never seen one. Acer's lit mentions "up to 2 gfx cards" somewhere (or it did) but it seems they never got around to making one and selling it.

I have always had acer laptops so dont know much about the others, thanks for the info.

I have an 8930G which is starting to show its age. I upgraded the graphics card in it but still get overheating issues with it now and then.

Other than that it has lasted me two years, cost me £600 as I bought it on eBay two months after someone bought it brand new for £1300 which was hardly used, so was a bargain really.

Finding that not many companies sell the 8943 range for some reason. I was tempted by that refurb one but sold now. PC world refurb ones are basically ones that have been sent back under the 14 day cooling off period and still have the 12 month warranty etc. So was going to do that and save the £300 but will continue looking now. I might put up with this current one for a bit longer as I am not sure I can justify spending £1400 as well get replacing my iPad with iPad 2 lol

They've got another 8943G on the list there, with i5 CPU and 5650 GPU. not a bad machine. Performance wise it's not the fastest thing going, but for 800 pounds it's not a bad deal on such a big screen.,

GPU I posted is about matched with the 5650.

I will give one to an 8930g user for free if they are wiling to try it. I think its broken (drivers crash with furmark) but will still work to test compatibility. If it works at all you can likely use 9800m GS.

It will be a lot faster in games, it might loose out slightly in media encoding but thats about it.

However there are machines with much better GPUs about.

Remember that acers are no longer upgradable graphics wise.
