Has the 5102 lived up to your expections or do you wish you've bought something else?
-
I enjoy my Acer 5102 for everyday non-business use.
The Battery Life is surprisingly past my expectations for a Acer.
It's not a Luxury notebook so I don't expect too much.
It's a Very good deal for the price I paid for it. $850 at Comp-USA, and I got 2GB RAM. Most people buy it for the same price with 1GB.
So YES, I'm happy with my purchase. -
Im getting disapointed with the X1100 graphics otherwise im happy with it. Its just notebooks with better video cards have been getting cheaper lately. and this summer when i have an extra $500 or so i might be tempted to buy one with Nvidia 7600 graphics unless an even better model comes down in price.
Everything but the video card is top notch. -
Other than the fact that i cracked my screen by picking it up from the outside, it is good for the price.
-
WOW, how hard did you squeeze it while picking it up?
I'm very carefully about my screen, open or closed. When closed I don't even rest a empty paper cup on it. LOL joke -
only disappointed with graphics and after reading about core duo.
Plus, just now finding Toshiba and HP with Intel core duo and better video cards at slightly higher prices, I will take it back for full refund & with a smile.
using girlfriends 5102 since gateway 450rog motherboard conked out.
BTW - this is the 2nd gateway that has motherboard problem.. -
Disappointed... its crashing atleast once a day... locks up.. or some other non-sense... but not to risk being without it for an upcoming business trip... I have to remind myself to constantly save whatever I am working on.
Or when I am not even doing anything with the computer... like a phone call... it pisses me off to no end that it locks up on its own... and nothing I can do but hit the power off and restart.
First Acer product, everyone else claims they are better than gateway, HP or stinkpads.... Im starting to think the Thinkpad would have been a better choice... X-series. But I thought I would play nice and go for a great deal with the budget i was allocated...and save my company money and get a fantastic labtop based on the specs presented a 64bit processor for under $800... I multi-task like a mad man all day long... I hate freezing and waiting.
Im kinda pissed... typing this... not looking forward to acer tech support... and the waste of the time that will be diagnosing... but glad I sprung for the extended warranty on this bunk 'puter. Im MCSE Certified...blah blah.. its definetly a HARDWARE Glitch... Im going to run Sandra business software to get the nitty gritty facts on just wtf I paid for...err.. my boss paid for... ( which if I paid for this... this thread would have been full of expletives all over the f'n place.) -
I'm thoroughly impressed by this notebooks ATI X1100/Turion X2 combination. The integrated graphics manage to play quite a few games at decent settings. For example, I play War Rock at high settings and dynamic lighting enabled; the resulting frame rate was an average 30 (tested with fraps); very impressive.
However, I'm finding the 15.4" notebook, to be a bit heavy and not as portable as my previous 14" notebooks. Given a choice I would have bought the new 14" Acers which came out last month with the same specs (except with only 512MB DDR2, 80GB HD and no webcam); it sells for $100 less. My other choice would have been the Compaq V3000z whose price has fallen in the last few months.
The only concerns I've had is an inconsistent HD (systems has to check consistency a bit too often although the results never find anything wrong), a less-than-average battery life, and mediocre build quality (which is expected from a $800 notebook). Has anyone had any discoloration of the area where you rest your left palm? On my notebook, this area has become a slightly darker tinge of silver. Could this be due to the heat from the processor or HD? because I can't seem to clean the 'stain'. In addition, the left rubber foot of my notebook sits about 1mm above the rest; just annoying.
All in all, a very nice notebook for the price...at the time. -
Is dual channel enabled on your notebook? -
Question for those who found the graphics card disappointing - is it because you found the card not good enough for games or does it lack in quality generally?
-
I actually like the 5102, now that I have learned all of the 'quirks' and applied all of the necessary tweaks. The only regret I have is that I would have preferred one of the 14" notebooks that Acer came out with not long after the 5102 with the same specs.
-
Regrets none.
Gaming wise > it clearly stated IGP > IGP = opposite of gaming. Can still play games just set graphic options down to med or low for 3D, resolution depending on the engine being used, and also the audio settings > use the default the game provides. Only thing is in games that are graphic heavy, it does start to heat up pretty quickly which is expected. But I can play most fps still AAO 12x8 res, FEAR 6x4 res, CSS 12x9 res, HL2 12x9 res.
Only thing I would recommend is skip the mini mouse and get a regular size for gaming^^.
Audio is surprisingly good and MCE totally rocks for DVDs and music.
ps: I love the 5 in 1 media card reader, I use my extra 1GB SD card as a backup and as a jump drive now^^ -
So, for someone that has no plans for gaming, this laptop is good?
-
-
Its a great laptop for anything besides gaming definitely.
Im curious if any other Acer motherboards fit this model -
^^^^ Exactly -
I dont really plan on playing games, but if I do it would be:
GTA VC
LFS (I highly doubt)
CS (1.6)
But, if it wont play those, it does not matter at all. Thats fine, Its not for gaming. -
The newest southbridge driver really improves 3D effect for vice city.
Anyone regret getting the 5102?
