So I am assuming no one here has tried it. Will it void my warranty if I try it? I am just afraid that maybe Acer has a special firmware on the 20GB SSD because I see it is partitioned with 4GB hibernation storage and the rest as cache.

Check the original firmware number (S5FAM016) on the net. When Acer uses custom/OEM firmwares these are not available anywhere but in Acer computers and they have their own firmware revisions.
If S5FAM016 can be found anywhere apart from Acer- that means it's not Acer specific and can be updated easily.
