Are ACER coming out with a 9800m based laptop ?

Any ideas ppl. ?

 

It doesn't look like they're going that route. Especially with the release of the Aspire 1800 series with the new PCI-Express ATI X600 GPU. This is most likely the route they're gonna go. It's newer technology and will make their system designs compatible with the rest of the ATI X series GPU's.

If you must get a system now with an ATI 9800, you're stuck with the Dell's. You can get the ATI 9700 GPU's, they're powerful enough to play all the latest games without any issues.

Yeah the 9700m is good enough for todays games but the 9800m is based on the X800 which makes it almosts TWICE as powerful as the 9700m .... Dont wanna buy the Dell XPS/9100 ... tooo damn BIG ! The Acer 4501 is the biggest laptop i'd get ... Also Acer offers the best price/performance ratio ..

Are you sure Dell is the ONLY one with the 9800m ?? I dont need the laptop right now, i wont buy before August '05 ... just getting an idea if Acer would have a 9800m laptop by then ...

 

Actually, don't you mean that the X800 is based on the 9800 and then improved? The 9800 was out before the X800, so I don't see how that could be switched around. Currently, the X800 GPU is the fastest chip in the ATI line-up.

This is a quote from their site:

As you can see from these tests performed by ZDNet, the overall performance difference between an ATI MR9700 & ATI MR9800 is marginal. Both tests were done on the same Dell XPS.

So wanting a system with the ATI 9800 GPU is not necessarily the best thing. With the idea of holding off for a system with better specs to support future games, well, you're going to be waiting forever. New hardware always comes out, same goes for games.

Why not just wait for a system that has a PCI-Express GPU, this way you know you have the lastest. They're already starting to appear in systems (Acer Aspire 1800 series has an X600).

But, as I stated before, currently Dell is the only manufacturer that has the ATI 9800 GPU with their notebooks. They had an exclusive deal with ATI which expired recently, that's why no one has this GPU. I personally think they're gonna jump past the 9800 and go straight to the X series GPUs.

Since you're not really gonna be buying a notebook until August 2005, I don't really think there's a point in speculating that far into the future. That's almost a year later and by that time, they probably will have the 9800 GPU's available, but the 9800 may be entry level or even obsolete.

Thanks for the info. VB ... Yeah I know August 2005 is still far far away, but right now I am just getting opinions to which brands are good and just doing some research so that when I do buy a laptop it'll be a good deal ...

You are correct, the Mobility Radeon 9800 GPU is based on the X800, but the X800 was improved on over the Radeon 9800 GPU (desktop).

I stand corrected on the UT2004 numbers, didn't read the little caption below the test (CPU speeds, not GPU). [ ]

But regarding the tests using 3DMark, I don't really like to use these numbers as I personally don't think it actually measures actual games in the market. I like to see actaul numbers from popular games, this is the only way to be sure of overall performance.
