Are the intake holes on the bottom of the Aspire 5536-5142 missing on purpose?

I picked up an Aspire 5536 with the AMD QL-65 for my mother and when I took it out of the box today the first thing I noticed is that the vent holes underneath the heat sink aren't actually open. The molded grill is there but the bottoms of each opening is solid plastic. Searching around google I found no complaints about this being an issue so I don't know if it is on purpose, but it just seems weird.

These holes, are they meant to be sealed off?

Maybe it's their new measure of preventing dust clogging the system - drawing air in through the vents and around the plastic piece to the fan.
I honestly don't know, though. Hope you find an answer!
