Do Acer ever release updates for graphics drivers past the "stock" drivers they install on release? I don't wish to use modded drivers at at least one person has encountered problems with video playback on this forum.

Firstly: Where do you live(country etc)
Secondly: What was your job descripition(sales, tech etc)
Thirdly: How long ago did you leave Acer?
Fourth and final: Why did you leave Acer?

Important questions to save wasted time on your behalf. Especially when starting a potentialy great thread. :D

But the price was nice wasn't it?

Is it possible to add a bluetooth module to the Acer 5920 to enable the dedicated button work? And if so, is it easy to do?

By easy, I mean without risk of damaging the notebook components.

Some questions asked here are rather redundant. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is true. Lower-end electronics are no different than buying a KIA and comparing it to a luxery brand. It doesn't seem fair, but the truth is it is hard to make affordable electronics and not skimp on some areas or even build quality.

No, the hardware is not installed inside the unit. You could buy another unit with BT but thats a little expensive. If you might have gone up on the model you bought you would have had this in the first place. Think ahead with electronics although I know price dictates for most of us what we can buy.

What's the difference between tech support and a tech. Nothing right. Have you ever fixed every problem you run into over the phone. It's much easier with the hardware sitting in front of you.

the uk support is a joke....i sent mine back with a problem and they fixed that and they where also kind enough to give me another lot of problems!!

they had to change the uper case (ie,one with the keyboard). doing this, they have damaged my lcd screen as there are prssere marks from the keyboard now, and a few other pressure marks!! they have also cracked the case on the side (the crack is between a usb port and the ethernet port) and the lcd case near the webcam is slighlty loose and that needs sorting out!!

how they managed to cause somany more problems i dont know!!

Actually, it makes a big difference. (In particular, what your job description was).
As TeeJay 44 mentioned, the answers to these questions could help to cut down on some of the questions you're getting hammered with now...

For example, If you had a job answering the phone, then we could ask why you didn't have enough CSR's around that place, and why customers have to stay on hold forever when they call. (Maybe that's why you left....too many calls, and not enough CSR's?)

If you were a qualified repair Technician, you could be immensely helpful with more advanced Technical questions.
(If you weren't, people wouldn't bother you with technical questions, but would instead stick with questions concerning customer relations).

You seem to be evading the question...for what ever reason, I'm not sure.
Perhaps you're embarrassed about the job you had there? (No need to be...although your "what difference does it make" reply leads me to believe so).

    Here's one example:
    What does that mean exactly???
Did you get so many calls about the 5100 that it drove you crazy, and the upper level Technicians were tired of you asking them what to do?
    Or,
Is it more difficult to work on them for some reason? (If in fact you personally worked on them).
    Or,
Do you think they're junk for some reason? (And if so, again, is this based on the number of calls you received, or the hard time you had repairing them yourself?
Or, an unusual number of RMA's you had to send out?

You see where I'm headed with this?

If you stated exactly what you did (and maybe even why you left), perhaps people here would have a better handle on what to ask, and what NOT to ask you.

Regardless of what you did for Acer, I must admit it takes a lot of courage to start a thread in an Acer Forum with the topic heading:

" Ask someone who used to work for Acer".

Hey, as TeeJay said in a later post, good luck...you'll probably need it in this thread!

(Especially if you refuse to state exactly what your level of 'expertise' was).

Not to worry though...I suspect people here will find out in a hurry what you know, depending on the answers you supply, and/or the technical questions you prefer not to address. ;)

I've an Aspire 5102 and speedfan only displays my temperature, it doesn't detect my fans. Am I overseeing something? Cause I would like to have much more control over my fan, as it is spinning almost all of the time (even when the cpu is 35°...why is that?)

The MB's in the Ferrari's are quirky.

When you add a partition to the HDD the company isn't obligated to save it. When you send it in you authorize them to take the system back to factory if needed.

Customer service is a pain in any company.

Whining noise may be a dirty fan. Compressed air to clean might help. Keeping the system clean and free from dirt always helps the heat issues too. There is a lot of technology squeezed into a small area and this creates heat issues.

My advice to everyone is, If all else fails keep complaining and escalate the call. Sooner or later they may help but you have to complain like anywhere else.

Contact microsoft for your upgrade, Acer does not deal with that.

HD DVD, good luck! I doubt they come out with one any time soon if at all.

Web cam is most likely software, but if it's been in for service they should have caught that. The tech dept was growing so fast that quality was being sacrificed for pure production reasons. Every tech has a certain amout of repairs that have to be done in a day. Some techs are very good and fix it right the first time others are new and learning. It's a hit and miss kind of thing.

Check the plastics for melting, the 5100 as a heat disapation problem, make sure the fan is clean with some compressed air. If that fails send it in because the broblem is in the MB. Also try setting it to auto fan speed.

The company is not that bad, but most of the time everyone has their own desription of the problems and on a bench it can be tested properly. And yes I was a technician for them. Why I left is my business! If you don't want to listen to my advice don't ask. I said I will try to help if possible.

Are there bad machines out there? Your a computer person obviously if your on here so you know the are lemons in every make of computers or just plain electronics. This is just something I do for fun now and not for a living. Any new units coming out will have issues that I will no longer be aware of and that's because "I no longer work there!". Ask a question and if I can I will help but redundancy is pointless. I can't answer questions about other dept's or why the calls take so long or why you think the techs don't know anything. You will make your own opinions no matter what I tell you. Now It's nice to do this for fun and not like a robot repeatedly doing the same thing day in and day out. If that's your idea of living then enjoy.

Really, no need to get so defensive.

I simply felt that stating what your job position was with Acer might help YOU.

Obviously (as you mentioned yourself), you're getting a lot more questions than you expected.
And now that you've confirmed you were indeed a Technician for them, maybe that will help to lessen the 'burden' somewhat. (Although I suspect now that everyone knows you're 'technically knowledgeable', you may get a lot more technical questions).

Funny, I don't see anywhere in my post that I said I "didn't want to listen to your advice".
I simply wanted to know (as did others), what your job position was with Acer, so that maybe my questions (if I had any), would be better suited to you personally.

By your reply, either you didn't read my post too carefully, or your ability to comprehend the logic of it just isn't there for some reason.

    At any rate, have fun.
After all, you're the one who started this thread, with a topic heading that begged for a million questions covering an unlimited number of topics.

And when you mentioned in your reply:
"What difference does it make, do you need a job?"

I was simply pointing out that it DOES make a difference. (And to be honest, I though that was a rather smug remark, considering the question was asked in good faith).

    I understand completely.
In fact, for that very reason, I doubt I would have started this thread if I were you.

Unless you avoid this thread as much as possible, you just might get the very thing you didn't like in the first place.
However, If THIS is your idea of living, then enjoy.

It's brand new and I already send it in because I though it wasn't normal, but Acer repair said there was nothing wrong.
Try setting it to auto fan speed? Where can I do that? There's no option in my bios or in the acer software to do that.
Someone on the forum said that he installed Ubuntu on his 5102 and that the fan was spinning a lot less than in Windows. It should have something to do with the acpi-drivers.

Thanks for your patience to reply our questions.

I am led to believe you were probably pretty low in the tech food chain...first you call the program "fan speed" then you don't know that "auto fan speed" is a default setting. You would also probably know that most notebook fans don't register with SpeedFan since it is programmed for use with performance desktops. You would probably also have reminded the user to run the program as an administrator (sometimes you have to do it from the right-click menu, even if you are logged in as the administrator, especially if you are running Vista) so that the program would have full access to SMART reporting and a couple of other features.

Regardless, to the person who asked about it, the "Auto Fan Speed" setting is on the first tab "Readings" right above the temperature readouts and right below the "configure" button.

    - I am talking about the partion that ACER put on the hdd. I WANT it factory state, thats the problem.
    - fans are clear...
    - Microsoft told me to call acer who told me to call Moduslink who told me to call acer... and you get the picture.
    - HD DVD was a long shot but I though I would ask it anyway.
    - web cam only works 10% of the time... so it is software likely. but the acer tec caused the issues. but can't fix them. it all started after the 3rd repair.

good luck with ALL the questions...

Low on the food chain that's a good one. Thanks for filling in the missing parts I left out. I was jumping from one question to the other. For the record I held one of the lowest repeat rates on repairs and that's at one unit per hour consistantly. There were people better than I but I held my own. I don't use the software but it is used by many techs on their own systems that don't have a bios setup to allow fan control. But the problem is still on the MB for his issue. This is inside knowledge that you guys may not have. Just trying to help.

Third time in, call and escalalate the call to a supervisor and that the unit should be checked by a level two technician. They may keep it longer but it will be done right.

We went round and round about this whole CD thing we never could get a straight answer from MS, but honestly Acer doesn't have the Software. There are even some units that ship without software from the factory and that's not right! I never agreed with that but what could I do I was low in the food chain as per another posting. I wouldn't like not having software for my system.

Anyway, can't say as I blame you.

So it appears.you really look like a child now.
Here is what i saw in this five pages thread:
Have you respond to my question? NO.
Have you really give the answers that the people asked you? NO.
Half of this thread is questions about you and other stuff related.
But if you are/were an acer tech why you hide or go away now?
The people here are to hard to convince?
Or you don't have the answers that you tought you had when you started the thread?

I think is better to you to go play with your xbox

I know Acer does not have the disk, but it would have been nice for us if acer tried to help us out against MS and Moduslink.

also my system WAS sent to a level 2 tec... I did escalate the call...

got any more '12 year old answer'?

PS: Wii is the best of the 3.

Whats up bird, man I can't believe you started this thing. I told you let these poeple fight it out with themselves, but you want to be helpfull. You idiot! Some listen and some sound like aholes. They will find out that you were a good to have becase you know the computers. thanks for fixing my system, it works great now. After numerous tries and being told there was no problems found the new board works great. When did you quit? I knew you were bored but I didnt think you would leave. Let them fight with Acer like i had too. They have no clue about the machines and what fixes them just like i didn't. Hey can i send you my wifes desktop? it shuts off just as it boots up. you said something about the modem causing that model to do that. can you send me a modem or should i order one from dell jr? Get back on live and are you going to race your car this weekend? you said your out for the weekend. just so you all know he is a great help with things acer won't tell you. Send me pics of the porsche if you still have it. hope to see you online soon. Now lets see you guys find answers no one is willing to tell you on the stupid phones.12 years old thats crazy man but after reading some of the things people wrote why bother with the sheep  lloco73 you have to use ghost and clone it. your soo smart but even i know that.

you told me something that i allready knew.
What i'm asking for is how to restore the hidden partition if you erased it and have only the restore dvd, there's a lot of people here that want to know how to.
For an ex-Acer Tech as "FIBIRDRE" it should be easy to respond to this simple question, or not?

For the Bluetooth, the USB dongle that I received with my Sony-Ericson works with my laptop also ( My Blackberry is also connected with this dongle setup without any problems) Just have to make sure the setup is correct and that the laptop/device can "see" the other device your hooking up, and that you know the access code (a lot of times its 0000). You can find these dongles almost everywhere (I look a lot on e-bay  ) good luck.
