    Hi!

Just bought an Aspire 1513 (Athlon 64 3400+ processor). I did expect the unit to be pretty noisy and thought I could live with that, but now the noise is getting on my nerves! So, is there a way to silence it? Change the fan?

I'm thinking of experimenting with the fan, but only if I can monitor the fan speed and the CPU temperature. Anyone who knows of such a utility? I've tried a couple of different motherboard monitors, but no one seem to work.

    Regards

    /Nora

Hi. Try setting the power management to something different than "Always On". You can do this by pressing Fn-F3. A window opens and by pressing Fn-F3 multiple times, you can rotate through all options.

If you select the "Minimum power management", you will get almost 100% performace, but when your machine is idle, the fan will spin at low speeds.

I played around with SpeedswitchXP and the power schemes in XP, but didn't notice any difference in the way the fan was spinning up and down. However I tried setting the power scheme to "Minimum power management" as you suggested and that actually seemed to help! The fan doesn't spin up as easily as before. Thanks! I guess I was too impatient before trying your suggestion. I'm still interested in a motherboard monitor though. Any idea?

I haven't tried any motherboard monitoring utilities in my 1501Lmi. Here are some monitoring tools that work on desktop PCs:

    http://mbm.livewiredev.com/
    http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Frankly though, even if I haven't tried anything, I think that none will work. Usually laptops don't have temperature monitoring chips. But in case you find something that works, please post it here.

    Nora,

You can try Mobile Meter. This has been tested to work on notebooks by a few users on this site. Here's the website. The main page is Japanese, but has an English link as well. I think you can only download from the main page.

The Mobile Meter works! It is the only one that works. However, it only displays the CPU temperature, not the fan speed. Now, the question that remains is if I dare to experiment with a fan change!

I'm mainly using the notebook for recording audio and when doing this I want to set the power scheme to "Always On" as another setting may increase the probability of lost audio buffers. Also, when recording audio it is nice to have a silent environment! Anyone that has experience with cooling notebooks?
