Hey all, last summer I purchased a Acer Aspire 1690WMLi, but I am about to get a HP, which has ddr2 pc5400 (667MHz) RAM, which I want to put in the Acer (so I can then upgrade my HP).
On the acer.ca website for the 1690 series it says they take up to ddr2 pc4200 (533MHz) RAM.
    Link for this:
    http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache...19+1690+site:acer.ca&hl=en&gl=ca&ct=clnk&cd=2

So, can I stick the 667MHz ram into the acer and will it underclock it? is there any risk in trying to find out???????????
To further complicate the situation the acer site (from above) says that there is 2x256MB ddr2 pc4200 (533MHz) RAM sticks in my 1690, BUT when I opened my acer today, I found out that it's ddr2 pc3200 (400MHz) RAM!!!!

    What should I do?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan987

Edit://was just fooling around in the bios and was wondering what MaxDVMT means under the video options? I can choose 64MB, 128MB or MaxDVMT, anyone know what MaxDVMT means? Thanks!

i can't help you with the video, but i WOULD NOT risk putting the pc5400 in the laptop that says it takes up to pc4200. you might (very least) make the laptop not start at all, or (very worst) blow one of the mem. controllers on the MB and ruin the laptop.

the best way to make the acer faster is to add as much ram as it can handle and as fast as it can handle (pc4200)

Thanks for your response Vorin, the only reason I'm going to ask for someone to second this opinion is because I just upgraded my girlfriend's laptop and we used higher clock RAM sticks that were then underclocked by the system, then again it wasn't ddr2 RAM.

If no one else has any information, it looks like I'll be taking your advice Viron,

    thanks again!

From what i know it will "underclock" the ram to a speed that it can support. I have done this on a desktop before and it worked.

I would also like to know what maxdvmt is as i cant find anything about it.
