This is supplied via the headphone socket. It's an optical output so you need an optical cable with a Mini TOSLINK jack. The laser is only switched on when the jack is inserted, to save battery power. With the jack plugged in you'll always get the digital sound out, whether or not you enable "digital speaker output" in the sound properties.

I can't believe ACER do not even discuss this feature in the notebook manual.

You won't get Dolby Digital (5.1) sound though, as Windows doesn't support this by default. If you want a DD 5.1 signal, install "ac3filter". This is a superb freeware app. The codecs kick in whenever you play a file with 5.1 sound (eg a DVD), and output a true DD 5.1 stream from your optical output.

Fiatti, I can't thank you enough.
    I own 1804wsmi.
Sp/dif support is mentioned in the specs but other than that nothing.
    Nothing at all.
    I mean zero, null, nothing.
    If it wasn't for Fiatti...
Not to mention other ommisions supportwise.
    Anyway thanx again Fiatti :)
