Which one would you guys recommend?

Travelmate has 2ghz processor and SXGA+ screen, the Aspire has 1.8 dothan with 15.4" WXGA+.

I've never had widescreen notebook before. How do you guys like it if you have one? Also, is WXGA+ too small a resolution to be practical? I know it limits gaming resolution, but what about things like surfing the web? Are pages really large in appearance?

Also, the Aspire has a 220nit brightness while the Travelmate has 200. Does anyone know what difference this would make? I've never really heard of "nit" before.

    Thanks!

Also, what about the Ferrari 3200? I'm interested in this as well. How does this A64 mobile chip stack up to ones, say, in emachines? I know it's lower voltage but is it slower as a result (scales down more)?

They both do. The only difference is the Aspire is slot load.

How much l2 cache does the 2800+ low voltage have? The acer website says 1mb but some sources say 512kb.

I used to have an Acer Aspire 2000WLMi until I returned it. The screen resolution was fine at first since it was my first laptop but later on I realized that I needed more screen space. I have arrived to the conclusion that I would want WSXGA especially that I write code and flip through them quickly.

In regards to the "nit" setting, I'm not sure about it but the Aspire screen was bright and beautiful. Again, too bad its WXGA.

The widescreen was good as it can sit on your lap fully, i.e. the extra width allows it to be placed on your lap better. Unfortunately, the greatest concern I had that lead me to returning the laptop was the repeating key problem. It has been documented by many users around the world extensively on another board and I could not deal with it (there is also no official fix for it). The problem was certain keys would repeat themselves when typing very fast, eg. "in" would become "ii", or "on" would become "oo", ". " would become "..", "l " would become "ll", etc.

Acer would have a great Aspire model in their hands if they increased the resolution to WXSGA, shorten the length of the laptop since they got rid of the Arcade console, fix the keyboard problem, and make the mouse buttons less stiff.

I'm curious, is the keyboard issue (I've heard of it elsewhere) limited to the Aspire?

Does anyone know what the exact width of the 2000's is. Acer has 14.2" on their site, but this seems odd. Cnet says 13.1" in its review.

So whats the verdict? I'm also looking at Acer, but can't decide between the Ferrari 3200 with 64 bit and about 3 hrs life, vs. the 8006LMi with the 755 pentium M and about 5 hrs life.

I'm into gaming, but i'm also going to college next year, so i'm not sure which is best for my priorities. What do you think is better overall??

Also, i've heard so much about "running hot" about all notebooks. How hot do they get during intense performance, and how much does it really matter??

Thanks air, i'll definately consider it now. Although, i'm still not sure about Acer's reliablity. I've heard not so great things and i haven't heard much good about em.

If u really want a laptop, buy a Centrino.
Centrino is the best platform for laptops.

Most laptops NON-Centrino have many hot issues and a poor battery life.

    Regards!

Oh and I just dig the way the Aspire looks. But I'm wondering if that arcade thing gets in the way while typing. Anyone have any experience with that? Please let me know. I mean I can't even check the Acer's out since none of the stores here carry them. But I'm very interested in getting either the Travelmate 8003-8006 or the Aspire 2025WLMi. Just want to make sure I get one that feels right.

NeoAvatar, i was over at an acer showroom just now. Was toying around with the AS2000, older model and with the presence of Arcade. I found it a lil annoying when I was using the touchpad. The bottom of my palm would be resting on the arcade buttons. When it comes to typing, it feels good to me. tried to get the "ii" problem to come out. the salesman must be wondering what the hell is wrong wif this customer :p

Thanks Vai. Yeah I was wondering about that.

Would those arcade buttons accedentily get pushed during normal touchpad and keyboard use? Also the CNET Review said the keyboard is too far up, making it not as comfortable to use. Did you find that at all?

Please let me know. It is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Neo

Hi Neo, the arcade buttons are pretty firm. Just by resting the lower area of your palm on it would not be able to push the button. I was toying around with the Aspire 2000 series for around half an hour yesterday in the store and the buttons didn't get pushed unintendedly. Its just that I don't like resting my palms on some buttons. The arcade buttons are stiff. So its alright.

The keyboard was all right for me, I didn't even notice it was that far up. But then again, I'm no laptop expert. The keyboard seemed to be in the right area. To me, its uncomfortable to type on ANY laptop for that matter! Guess i'm not used to it.

I've just ordered the Aspire 2012. Doesn't have the arcade, but oh well, I like it better that way anyway. I suggest you head down to any showroom that stocks the Aspire and get a feel for yourself :) My comments are purely from the non technical consumer point of view :)

Sorry lopoz can't help you out with the AS2025 availability. In Malaysia none of the retail assistants can tell me about the release date. Some haven't even heard of it. Hmm makes me wonder how they got the job in the first place.

Yes, I'm a fan of steve vai :) I like his music and especially his style! But lets not stray the topic towards guitar virtuosos shall we? :p

    Thanks again Vai.
    I appreciate it.

Wish I could check out the Acers, but they are not in any of the stores here. I searched about all of them.

I'm planning on watching a lot of movies and playing some games on the Acer Aspire 2020 line of notebooks (not sure which i'll buy)

I'm wondering if the picture won't get deformed because of the weird aspect ratio.. Resolution is (for the 15.4" models) 1280*800..

    Can anyone comment?

    P.S.

    cool!

quote:
Yeah you set this in the ATI driver control panel - simply uncheck 'fit to screen.' This will give you 10*7 with black bars around the screen. Better than the squished look.

A lot of newer games support wide screen native resolutions - so you won't have to compromise.

thats nice :) thanks for the info vai!
