I've never seen that happen on an LCD screen before, so I don't know if it will help, but have you tried updating the bios?

It looks like it's displaying 1024x768 on a 1280x800 screen, which would explain the black borders on the right and bottom edges. Normally though, the 1024x768 display should get resized to fill the whole screen. Maybe there's a setting in the Display configuration for the SiS chipset?

I would definitely suspect a software or BIOS issue, not hardware. Try updating the BIOS and the graphics driver.

You might also want to try 1280x800. That would give you more screen space and actually improve the sharpness since it's the native resolution for widescreen LCDs such as yours.

Have you connected an external monitor at some point?

Standard monitors typically use 4:3 resolutions (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, etc), while widescreen monitors use 16:10 resolutions (e.g. 1280x800), so your graphics chip must switch resolutions when you toggle from the built-in LCD to an external monitor. I don't think you can display a 16:10 resolution on a 4:3 monitor (if you try, you'll most likely see black), at least not on your typical monitor.

I would check the display configuration for some setting to configure a different resolution for the external monitor VS the built-in LCD. You might have to press a hotkey to toggle modes. I can't give you specific steps for your chipset though because I don't have a SiS chipset.

Try unplugging the external monitor before setting the resolution to 1280x800.

I've never hooked up an external monitor, so I don't know if that would affect anything. There are some settings in the eManager that have to do with resolution and which monitor to display to. Press the 'e' button by the power button. And you could try turning off the external monitor, just choose the 'LCD panel only' for Display Device.

    Hi there,

it may be because the acer ePresentation is still on. when you use a external monitor, you can change the resolution i.e. 1024x768 and it will stay that way on both the screens. you can turn the presentation mode off through the Acer eManager. hope this helps

Ok, but what if i have a 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA+) external LCD? My freaking 5021WLMi just won't set the external LCD resolution to 1680 x 1050. Have you ever experienced such problems?

Obviously, i have the drivers for the monitor installed... Seems like the Mobility R X700 won't produce such a resolution.. Which is total nonsense for me.

    HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

I just saw an external widescreen LCD for the first time (at http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11097928), so it definitely looks like they're out there.

I would guess it might be a limitation of the display driver or the Acer ePresentation software. Have you tried contacting Acer? They might be able to fix this in a future software update...
