3.Assamble
I think you can do this all by yourself. Just be careful that you connect the cooling fan's cable.
BTW, you can also upgrade the ram from 512 to 2GB

4. Benchmark.
I don't reinstall the windows xp, just turn on the laptop and the xp found the 2 core cpu and reboot.
at first, compare the 2 cpu.
compare the idle temperatue (everest ultimate 4.60)
sempron 3400+
turion tl-50
good temperature control after cleanning the heatsink and using the arctic silver 5.
the temperature of full load under the sempron is around 61-65C, the turion tl50 is around 57-60C. -
Benchmark with everest ultimate 4.60

Great post!!! I didn't think I had the guts to change the processor in my Acer, but you made it simple. Following your instructions, it took me about an hour to upgrade to a Turion TL-56. Temps so far are similar or slightly lower than with the Sempron. Thanks so much for posting this.

I'm very happy that I can help you. Now, U can install the WIN7 on this laptop, and it runs fast.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was looking everywhere for information on this specific model.
Lately my Acer Aspire 3050 has been getting hotter than usual and the fan is making horrible, loud sounds. I decided the least I can do to help would be to clean the fan and apply a thermal paste to the heatsink. I removed everything I possibly could from the back of the laptop, but was unable to gain access to the heatsink. I had no idea that I would need to go to the front to remove the keyboard and LCD until reading this post.
I had previously upgraded my RAM to 2.5GB and harddrive to 500GB, and it's great to know from you that I will be able to access the processor if I like as well. Overheating has been my big concern, and I see that your temperatures have gone down a little since upgrading processors. Good to know!
I'll have to see if the dust removal makes my fan a happy camper or if I'll be replacing it. Do you know if I should be able to just replace the fan and attach it to the heatsink or will I have to replace the heatsink/fan combo?
Laptop fans are honestly one thing that I know nothing about as far as if there are more effective replacements or if they're all the same as far as cooling power. Do you have any knowledge of this?
I see that you mentioned the ability to happily upgrade to Windows 7 with the new processor. I went to Windows 7 a couple of months back and found that my Aspire 3050's fan went batsh|t and it was unhealthily hot (even with the double fan cooling pad I keep running underneath at all times). There was a huge difference in temperature and fan action between Vista and 7. I had to downgrade back to Vista. I googled the overheating of laptops when using Windows 7 and it turns out to be a very common problem. Way to go, Microsoft. I assume after upgrading processors, you've gone to 7. Are your temperatures okay?
Again, thanks so much for taking the time to post this! -
I am not sure what is the issue with your fan and heatsink, but if you think the fan or heatsink are working not well, you better check them. If you can find a fan as same as the orignal one, you can replace it by yourself. Only 3 screws on the fan, just remove them, then replace the fan. You can find the fan and heatsink combo from ebay.
For the overheating, you should be sure the fan running well, the heatsink is clean, try to use silver arctic 5 or sth better.Be sure the heatsink is attached the CPU chip properly, no air between them.
For the Windows 7, I believe it's better than XP and Vista. Better power management, faster, smarter, easier. If you are tring to use a OEM ver. you can flash the BIOS including SLIC 2.1. Here you can find it.
BTW, the Turion's surface is bigger than Sempron's, so I think it's very helpful to transfer the heat more quickly. that is why after I replaced the sempron (25w) by Turion( 31w), but the temperature was down.
Good Luck! -
Hi
My Acer laptop is part of the 3050 series & is model 3053wxci.
It is running XP with 1gb ram & is very slow (used mainly for email, web surfing & skype video calls)
I presume that the Sempron to Turion upgrade as described above will work on this model as well? (just asking because I am not certain if the motherboards in the 3053 are the same as the 3050. I presume they are)
What is the fastest Turion processor I can get - TL50?
Do you think I should upgrade the ram to 2gb as well or rather upgrade ram than the processor, or do you think I will get better performance from the processor alone?
Also, I assume I will need to reinstall XP after the processor upgrade. How do I do this on an Acer from the eRecovery image on the hdd?
Thanks for the help. -
hi
attached are screenshots of my CPU & mainboard
thanks
