Hi everyone! I own an acer aspire 3104 wlmi from 3100 series. It has a Sempron mobile CPU and i'd like to change to a Turion X2. I bought a Turion X2 TL-52 and tried to upgrade it.
With the last bios the Turion is recognized by the motherboard and the very first time started well on win xp pro. But just when windows installed "ACPI Multiprocessor driver" then it didn't reboot nevermore. With a system test software i tested the cpu. This software tested cpu1 and cpu2, but it failed only the "processor control cpu2 test".
Now i understand that maybe the motherboard doesn't have the multiprocessor support or it doesn't have it enabled. I looked for a jumper but nothing...
Also the service manual shows in the cpu compatibility list the Turion TL-52
I hope somebody will help me. If there are known experiences about.
Surely if i reinstall the sempron cpu, notebook works flawless
Thanks to all who reply this thread

An update: if i try to install Vista before it loads the installer, it gives alternatively two different bsod errors: PFN LIST CORRUPT and MULTIPROCESSOR NOT SUPPORTED.
I think (as report the service manual) that the mainboard is the same than the original 3100 series turion x2 model -
I guess that the aspire 3100 series use sempron cpus instead the aspire 5100 series use turion x2.
However the motherboard seems the same as report the service manual (if needed i could upload it) and an internet shop sells the mainboard as spare part for 3100 and 5100.
The bioses on acer site are the same. i flash the 5100 bios into the 3100. But the bios still write MODEL ASPIRE 3100.
So what are the difference between the two models? And why turion don't work?
Maybe a jumper could resolve... -
Nobody answer me... I guess nobody knows a problem like mine.
Anyway thank you all -
Whats the motherboard code ? (MB.xxx.xxxx________)
-
I really have no idea but maybe that CPU is bad..? Might be a good idea to check the hdd too.
-
While for the CPU, initially I thought that was faulty but when the error "multiprocessor not supported" appeared, I was not so sure. Anyway I can't verify it cause I don't have another notebook with Socket 1.
But the strange thing is that the motherboard and the bios are the same than 5100 aspire series. So acer uses sempron on 3100 and turion on 5100. I think it's a kind of restriction and if I transform it onto 5100 then I will enjoy the Turion X2.
@ Andy: i'm looking for the motherboard code, then i'll tell you. You are on the right way... -
I think you may have a motherboard incompatibility.
I saw the same PFN LIST CORRUPT error when I was trying a quad core in a generic socket 775 desktop motherboard. (I junked the mb in the end as it only supported ancient Intel dual cores)
If you can get the motherboard serial number as Andy suggested and try a google search you may find a more conclusive answer. -
Anyway where I find the motherboard number? On pc start or on the board? I can't find it on the board for now. I have a part of motherboard open not all... -
The motherboard code will be printed on a sticker on the Ram-Bay.

MB MBABK02001729006821601
as reported on the sticker.I reported also the space between the code -
A.T. this, your motherboard does support MC CPUs.
Which version of XP have you got ? Did you try installing the CPU driver on the first boot ? -
ok it looks like a restriction that is not present on 5100 series. but where you find that the mb is incompatible on that link? i read turion x2 on specifications
i got a classic xp pro. are you saying to install cpu driver at xp install?
only one time xp run flawless until xp install the "multiprocessor acpi driver" then on reboot it stand still on win xp logo while the little blue bar runs infinitely -
Your motherboard does seem to support multi-core CPUs, according to that link.
XP - which service pack ?
Install the CPU driver, the first time you boot into windows with the Dual-Core CPU installed.
And do you have the latest BIOS installed ? -
With dual core installed can't boot and then can't reinstall. If I install at first reboot it stops
I flashed the latest bios for 3100 and then i tried the 5100 one. It's the same file, same extension. The bios setup say "Aspire 3100", I should transform in "Aspire 5100".
In that post forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4272088#post4272088 the guy said that 5100 mount a fan with 2 outlet. Maybe acer blocked the dual core cpus too -
As you can see I have a aspire 5100 and I can tell you that the extra outlet at the back of my notebook is also blocked, it came like that. Opening it won't make any difference because the system (cpu) fan output is funneled to go to the outlet on the side only.
As far as I know the aspire 3100 should be able to take a turion x2 as the processor socket on there is socket s1 just like the 5100 turion x2 mainboards. Doesn't cpu-z report your mainboard as being an acer navarro board; which is the same exact mainboard that the 5100 and 5110 series use? The latest bios you should currently have is version 3.13
Also as you said in your first post when you put in the turion the bios recognized it however windows didn't like it. Well to me then everything is working fine there as the bios is the "base level" of the notebook and once it is recognized there then all you need to work on is why windows doesn't like it. I would also suggest (as Andy said) that you download the AMD cpu driver for XP and install that first on windows boot incase anything weird is going on within windows itself. -
is it xp home??, isnt there something about that xp home does not support more than 1 cpu?
-
the base level could be full level?
i also think that it's not matter of win xp because the problem appears also on winvista and in the test software, anyway i installed winvista with sempron and i'll try it with turion x2.
i'm convinced that even if the motherboard is the same, acer made a restriction only for 3100 series notebook
Aspire 3100 (3104Wlmi) CPU upgrade
