I've gone around and around and Acer won't tell me
whether the 3100-1718 uses SATA or PATA hard drives.

I have all their documentation and it doesn't say
    anything.

    Could someone enlighten me please?

And for good measure any suggestions/comments
about imaging my existing 80 mb HD onto the
new drive - it's running Vista Home Basic.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Gave up and opened the case. Not as bad as it was for the RAM
    upgrade.

If anyone needs to know my 3100-1718 uses a 1.5 GB/sec SATA
    Western Digital Scorpio drive.

Now I just need to find the best replacement (250GB+) and image
    my system to it.

here is a simple way to find out

if it shipped with XP, most likely PATA

    Vista, most likely SATA
