It takes almost 5 minutes! to boot or shut down. Moreover, if I close the lid before it shuts down completely, when I re-open, it turns out that shut down was not completed. That's the way it has been since I bought it and Acer tech support have not been much help.

get shot of all the acer junk first.then take a look and see whats running in task manager.something is running that is holding things up.
whats the start-up time from hibernation ? -
There is no Acer "junk" on the start-up list. From hiberhation it starts up in about 15 secs. The only programs that I added since purchasing it was Office 2003, Framemaker, Norton Antivirus and ZoneAlarm. I have all those running on my desk pc (XP) as well and it boots up much faster.

put your laptop spec, cpu, ram, blah blah blah.
nortans can cause trouble but not that much -
ok just got an email about this issue.
first have you got Vista on your laptop ?
second have you done the sp1 update ?
third if so zonealarm is now useless
if you are behind a router make sure the NAT is on and up to date.
then shut down your windows firewall. im behind a Nat router and have been for three years and have never used any firewalls. why have two when a hard wired firewall is good enough

half are anti virus so be warned -
the full email.
Microsoft is warning Windows Vista users that a forthcoming service pack for the operating system may stop some third-party programs working.
The software giant has released a list of programs that may be broken by the SP1 update for Vista.
Most of the software hit by the upgrade are security programs that prevent Windows users falling prey to viruses, trojans and booby-trapped webpages.
The Windows Vista update will be released to the public in mid-March.
Update loop
Service Packs are among the biggest updates Microsoft issues for its various operating systems. The software firm said SP1 makes Vista more secure and reliable and introduces some new features.
The list of programs affected by SP1 is divided into three. Some will be blocked by the update, some will not run and others will lose some of their functions.

Of the 12 programs mentioned, six block viruses or keep an eye on the places someone visits online.
Microsoft warned that its list was not "comprehensive" and asked people to get in touch with the maker of any affected software to fix problems.
Although the update will become widely available in March, Microsoft is releasing it to business customers in February.
Microsoft has also been forced to withdraw an update to Vista that was required before Service Pack 1 could be applied.
Writing on the Windows Vista blog, Nick White, Microsoft product manager, said the company had withdrawn the preparatory update while it investigated.
Isolated reports suggest that some machines on which the preliminary update has been applied go into an update loop.
He wrote: "We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue." -
Yes the notebook came with Vista Home Basic. No I don't have SP1 and I see that Microsoft is withdrawing it
What is NAT? I have a modem/router provided by Sympatico.
Since Zone Alarm is on, windows firewall is off.
Don't understand "put your laptop spec, cpu, ram, blah blah blah.

Before I removed all the Acer "junk" from the startup list, the boot/shut down times were over 5 minutes! -
how much ram do you have. and what is your cpu. -
I have a 3680 and the only thing that solved my 5 minute shutdowns were a new 7200 RPM hard drive
Just for sh!ts and giggles, I will put my old 5400 stock hard drive in occasionally and it is soooooo slow compared to the new 7200 rpm hard drive. No comparison AT ALL.
My 3680 will shut down in about 12 seconds now. Complete shutdown. Whereas before it would literally (no joke) take over 3.5 minutes. -
My aspire 3680 has an Intel Celeron M 520 processor and 1 GB DDR2. Perhaps as michacerboy suggests, my problem is the hard drive
-
yep its your hard drive there have been other posts about this on many forums.
it seems acer have a stock of junk HD. -
The solution seems rather expensive (about $150) considering that I paid less than $500 for the notebook
-
Dont look at it as cost prohibitive; rather look at it as your $500 notebook will now perform like a $900 laptop
Then when you are done with your Hard Drive, you can yank out the Celeron like I did, and install a T5300 Core 2 Duo that I bought off ebay for $75!
Oh, and btw, 1gb of ram if you are running Vista, is just mediocre. I would put 2gb in as soon as you get a chance. -
Aspire replaced the hard drive free of charge (still under warranty) and now it boots and shuts down in less than a minute
Aspire 3680/2354 boot and shut-down speed
