It's on basically the moment I press the power button. I'm not joking The air that comes blowing out of it is cold. Is it really necessary to have that thing blowing all the time? A friend has a comparable Dell, and it works just fine without noisy fan.

The reason I chose this model was the no frills y ness - integrated graphics, Celeron 410 M I believe - everything low power, low heat generation.. exactly so I wouldn't have to deal with this kind of issues.

I don't suppose the store will take the machine back because I don't like how much noise it makes..

Not much one can do about the fan. The Celeron M's do not have speed step, so even being a mobile processor they are unable to go into lower power states which would have allowed the fan to turn off since they are basically designed with the Pentium M/Core Duo/Solo in mind.

    Hi p-edoffaceruser,

On my acer I have emanager, in this you have the option to have the fan allways on.

If you have emanager then open it and go to acer settings then boot options. When in boot options (set boot options) you should have a check box for fan always on. If so uncheck this box.

cpu load and the # of processess determine if the cpu is running more or less. Check to see what clock your cpu is running at and also what background processes are chewing that up as well.
