I am upgrading a laptop for my friend and it is an aspire 360 and it currently has a celeron M 420 1.6 ghz, 533 MHz FSB 1 MB L2 cache. I have already upgraded his memory to 2 gbs which I do believe is the max for the notebook and i just want to know a couple things. What is the fastest possible cpu that I can upgrade his laptop with and where would I find the instuctions to do this. I have built many desktop computers and I am fairly saving with electronic devices as I just comletely disassembled my iphone 3gs to put a new case on it. If someone could enlighten me on this information I have requested I would be truly grateful. Thank you very much.

Aspire 3690 uses Mobile Intel® 940GML Express chipset which is compatible with the following CPUs:

    Intel® Celeron® M Processor ULV 423 (1M Cache, 1.06 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 530 (1M Cache, 1.73 GHz, 533 MHz FSB) Socket M
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 440 (1M Cache, 1.86 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor ULV 443 (1M Cache, 1.20 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor ULV 523 (1M Cache, 933 MHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 215 (512K Cache, 1.33 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 410 (1M Cache, 1.46 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 420 (1M Cache, 1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 430 (1M Cache, 1.73 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 450 (1M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 520 (1M Cache, 1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)

    Source: link

Acer's own service guide mentions explicitly only:
All those mentions by Acer are based on Yonah core. Using CPU based on Memrom might be more risky. So the fastest Yonah would be Celeron M 450.

Now which of these would be the fastest out of the processors that you posted? Once again thank you.

The fastest of those that should work is Celeron M 450.

You could also use the T1350 core solo @ 1.86Ghz with 2Mb L2 cache

I assume that the core solo is faster than any of the cpu's that you mentioned above, is this correct downloads? Thank you once again for taking the time to help me out with this matter.

Not really. It depends on the test.
Both use the same core- Yonah, both have the same FSB 533MHz.
Core Solo T1350 is 1.86GHz and 2MB cache
    Celeron M 450 is 2.0GHz and 1MB cache

So depending on the usage/test either faster clock of more cache will prevail.
Anyway- these two are pretty close. Price should also be a factor here.

Also Core Solo T1350 is not listed by Intel as supported by Mobile Intel® 940GML Express chipset

Alrighty then boss man thank you kindly and you enjoy your weekend. Great job that you are doing also. Thank you once more and take care.

Well downloads would you happen to know a good place where I can purchase the Intel® Celeron® M Processor 450 (1M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 533 MHz FSB). I seem to be having a bit of a hard time finding one. It took me a few minutes but I finally found the rep scale under your avatar which by the way is hilarious. LOL I did add some rep for your help and thank you.

    You are right.

Let's ignore that and start again- with something better :)

Core Duo T2600 works in your notebook.
It's faster than the Celeron- you just have to update BIOS to the most recent version available at Acer website prior to installing new CPU. It's also available online.

Well now that is what I am talking about service with a smile and even better yet a faster cpu. Have a good one downloads and if I need anymore help with this I will contact you. I have built many desktops but not messed with laptops to much. Is there a good place to find video instructions on how to replace the cpu or at least a tut with pics. Thank you sir.

Update: I have already updated his bios to 3.60 which is the latest update as far as I know but I do see a possible issue. The cpu you mentioned is for 667mhz and the fastest his laptop will support is 533mhz. Could you possibly explain how this cpu would work. Thank you

Update: I did just find a T2450 533mhz 2m cache 2.0 ghz would this work with the laptop? It is located here on Intel's site: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=29752

Did the upgrade to a T1350 myself on an aspire 3690 a couple of years ago , It had the 940GML chipset which would not take core duo chips, tried the T2400 & T2500 with no joy.

Honestly I have no idea how- I thought 667 wouldn't work so I ignored it and sticked to 533 but apparently it does according to the link I provided in my previous post.
There's a small chance that the user who upgraded to T2600 had i943 chipset rather than i940- the former supports 667MHz if I remember correctly.

If you want to be sure- go for T1350 if you're willing to take a risk try T2600.
It worked for that user in the same laptop- it should work for you too.

    EDIT: T2450 should work it's 533MHz Yonah

Well this one has the 950 chipset so then I see no reason at all why that would not work with this 3690 aspire. Did it improve on the speed of the laptop cashwo? As I said this one has the 950 chipset so what do you guys think, or should I say what road would you take at this point? Thanks again

I think your own idea is the best at the moment- T2450 has the best chance of working. I hope it's available unlike that Celeron though
    gottuhaveit- PM sent your way.

Well I certainly appreciate all the help that you have given me downloads oh and that link you sent to me when it opens a blue line goes across and then it does nothing else at all after that.

Update: I must say I just did a search and I saw a video on youtube with a t5300 core duo 1.73ghz installed and OS was windows 7. I thought I read that the 3690 does not have support for windows 7. Anyway I might just try that T5300 now were talking smoking for sure compared to its current speed. LMAO What do you know about the 3690 and installing windows 7 on it? Thanks again and talk with you soon.

Well sob I just upgraded the aspire 3690 to windows 7 ultimate and they say there were no drivers and that it did not support windows 7. Well I am going with the T5300 core duo 1.73 for damn sure now as like I said I saw it running on the 3690 in a video along with windows 7. Yehaw no all I need is a really good video for cpu replacement. Can you replace the cpu from the bottom of the laptop without taking it completely apart? Thanks guys

Now that is a naughty lie.
Sure Officially it is not support but if you know the parts you can source for the drivers.
    1)Chipset Driver download from Intel
    2)Audio Driver download from Realtek
3)Bluetooth from broadcom or use Windows Update
4)WebCam depends on model if you use SuYin or Bison you might be able to download and use the latest Cyberlink Webcam Viewing software
5)IR, ENE Card Reader, Conexant Modem get from Driver station
6)Synaptics Touchpad I would get from HP
7)Intel Graphics I would get it from Station drivers
8)Wireless I would the latest version from Station Driver

No need to take the laptop apart to upgrade the cpu, just the large bottom cover is enough. Probably worth physically checking which chipset you have as it is so easy to get at, then you know for sure. The 950 you are seeing is the intel gma950 graphics not the chipset, the 3690/5630/5680 series use the 940/943/945 chipsets.
