I have tried downloading the current BIOS from the US site, uncompressing the files and running the application and recieve " open flash.sys fail".

THEN I tried downloading V1.8 from the european site and again, unzipped the files, looked everything over, and ran the application and got the same
error "open flash.sys fail" I am a rookie, and I want to upgrade the processor to a dual core cpu, but cant even get the BIOS updated. HELP!! Its frustrating. I have an Acer Aspire 5315 with a dual core cpu and I love it. I just want ot upgrade my 4315.

Can you right click and run with Administrative Permission?
Not trying to be rude but this is Common Sense.
Flashing the BIOS is a low level operation in Vista and 7 low level system calls are protected hence you have to run with admin permission to load the BIOS flashing driver.

Thank you WEINTER for your reply. (Obviously I am also learning how to use this forum). I have NOT tried running the BIOS upgrade wit Admnistrative Permission. I will try that ASAP and post my results.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!! WEINTER you were absolutely correct.
I ran the BIOS update that I downloaded from the US site, V1.15, with
admin persissions and it ran PERFECTLY, then restarted my laptop.

When it did, I entered the F2 setup and checked the current version of the BIOS and it is NOW V1.15.

Now I am excited about recieving the cpu I ordered, and I will follow the instructions in the video from LostBoyKev.
Thanks again for giving me the one simple piece of advice that ACER would not even tell me.

WEINTER here is an update on my upgrade of my Aspire4315 cpu to a dual core processor.
YOU gave me the first piece of information I needed or I still wouldnt have the BIOS updated.
This morning, I have collected all the item I need to try to do that cpu upgrade. I followed the lostboykev video to the letter, and it WORKS like a charm. This little old laptop now is SMOKING FAST. I am so pleased with the information I have found on this forum. I see several people have "viewed" this, and I want everyone to know, IT WORKS. I got the correct processor, which is a socket P processor, and it was great to have that video. Thanks so much.

Weinter, I upgraded from the original 1.73 mhz Celeron single core cpu to an
Intel core2duo T5270 2.0 MHZ cpcu and it just SCREAMS. It was well worth the $50 I spent on ebay for the processor. I am using it right now, and its been GREAT.

Wow that IS A BARGAIN :D
A worthy upgrade for a good price. Good Job.
If you had bought a new laptop it wouldn't have cost only 50 dollars.

Yes, FIRST I downloaded the current version of the BIOS from the ACER website. Its a really neat package. You get a zipped file, then UNcompress it, then run the application file. But RUN IT AS ADMINISTRATOR and it runs perfect. Takes about 3 or 4 minutes max.
